AMG review: (4/5 stars)

Fat Mike freely admits to his spotty voting record. But that didn't stop him from founding www.punkvoter.org, an organization with a mission to mobilize young voters against President Bush and his administration's policies, and make 2004 the year punk spoke. Rock Against Bush features music from 26 likeminded artists, as well as a DVD packed with insightful, inciting political rabble-rousing and videos from types like Bad Religion, Anti-Flag, and Fat Mike's own NOFX. None More Black kicks things off with the martial, spittle-flying stomp of "Nothing to Do When You're Locked in a Vacancy," and Alkaline Trio's "Warbrain" attempts to save the world with a righteous pop-punk melody and memories of better days. The Offspring's "Baghdad" isn't the greatest song ever, but it's interesting that it dates from 1991 and the first Bush presidency. Speaking of the first Bush, Ministry returns with the frenetic industrial clatter of "No W," which updates the 1992 rant "N.W.O." with samples from the latest Bush president. Veteran D.I.Y. firebrands Jello Biafra and Billy Bragg are here, the latter teaming with Less Than Jake for "Brightest Bulb Has Burned Out." The Ataris cover Bad Religion's "Heaven Is Falling" acoustically, and Social Distortion's "Prison Bound" will hopefully turn A New Found Glory fans on to Prison Bound. Other highlights of Rock Against Bush include the bopping neo-new wave of the Epoxies, the Soviettes' raucous "¡Paranoia! Cha-Cha-Cha," and Authority Zero's "Revolution." There are also stylistic detours from Denali (the austere "Normal Days") and the World/Inferno Friendship Society ("Expatriate Act"). There's a rousing, ruefully funny essay from Fat Mike in the liner notes; 17 of the comp's 26 tracks are unreleased or otherwise rare; and Fat Wreck is giving the thing away for six bucks. If that's not enough incentive, the set's DVD portion includes a piece of typically scathing comedy from David Cross. -- Johnny Loftus

Cheers!

I've been looking for something like this. A listing of musicians that I should never buy their albums. Thanks, OP.

Will you think before you type? Your sentence structure once again makes you out to be some kind of idiot.

The question to ask of these people is; do you hate Bush because you hate the war or do you hate the war because you hate bush?

I posted this in hot deals because it is a punk music compilation CD with a DVD for a good price, not because of the theme of the CD or the ideals of the musicians. If you disagree politically or stylistically with the deal, then it is not for you and I by no means expect you to take advantage of the deal, but I would appreciate if the thread crapping could be kept at a minimum. Also, protest songs are somewhat of a tradition in this country and to call them propoganda without even listening to them because you disagree is myopic. Many of the tracks have no political undercurrents in the first place, they were just donated to the CD because the artists felt the cause was just. The local radio station here plays are least 3 of the songs and I did not previously know where they were from; even if you do not agree with the message behind Fat Wreck Chords release, the music is enjoyable if you like that style.

EDIT: And for those of you who insist upon turning this thread into a Bush debate, I voted for the guy. I traditionally do not lean left politically in my voting agenda, however our president has made many decisions over the course of his career that I think ill of, this war being at the forefront. I do not fool myself by thinking that Mr. Kerry would have been suitably less inclined to handle the situation in this manner and I am not asking any of you to change your political foundations, deep rooted and partisan as they may be. I only wanted to share this deal with the punk rock fans. Thanks.

Thanks for the info BatmanNate, I hadn't seen this but will definitely pick one up.

[edit] removed possibly inflamatory comments to avoid the thread turning into a political discussion. Thanks again for the deal BatmanNate[/edit]

I already bought this CD of the fatwreck website when it first came out.

And for those who base political affiliation ahead of everything else need to lighten up, it's a music CD. A damn good music CD. Listening to it hasn't changed my opinions about any of the bands on it or about Bush. I'm still voting for him.

I disagree, it is a great CD, for a great price. Even in you don't agree with the politics.

This is part of the reason why I think all religious hot deals and political deals should be put in the Off Topic forum. Too many thin skinned people out there.

Otherwise, great deal I must say if you are into that kind of thing. :)

All of you who chastise BatmanNate because you think he's pushing a political agenda are doing the exact same thing, posting something pushing your own political agenda. So how about following your own advice and STFU?

I say let them speak out and sell any CD they want. Then again, they better not cry when nobody buys their CDs and they are blacklisted by the American public (Dixies Chicks, anyone?). Free market in = free market out.

Having said that, how many people will change their political views as a result of a crap punk compilation CD? That's right, zero. So, who cares? Not me.
