fat folks, how did it happen?

my gf told me that she was fat before I met her. she is 5'5" and usually around 110#, but during her HS days, she ballooned up to 130#.
i didn't believe her until she showed me a picture, and i'll admit i wouldn't have looked twice at her if i had met her when she was in that state.

i asked her how it happened. how did she let herself go?
did she not own any mirrors? did she not notice her clothes were getting tight?

she said she really couldn't tell when looking at a reflection in the mirror, and clothing she just kept buying looser fitting clothing like sweats.

so my understanding is that if it happens gradually, you're less likely to notice how much of a lard you're becoming.
and i believe this varies per individually because if i see folds forming in my mid section, i know it's time to eat less and hit the gym harder.

so larger peeps on ATOT, share your experiences.

My ex girlfriend was about 105/110 when we started dating. She was 135/140 at the end.

I tried to exercise with her. I would always offer to go for a jog or something. It made no difference, as soon as we finished she was stuffing her face with ice cream.

Battle of the Bulge as I called it...

Food is tasty.

i understand food tastes great, but at what expense? at the expense of your health and lifestyle?
not being able to play the sports you enjoy? not being able to run around and play with your kids?
not being able to attract the opposite sex?

no one says you can't eat tasty food. just have some self control and eat smaller portions.

Well, that's not a huge increase. Its not too hard to put on 20 pounds if you're lazy and overeat. What I don't understand is the people who go from relatively thin to BIG. Like, lower 100's to 200-250. How do you let that happen to yourself?

She must have carried her weight really badly before... or lied about the previous weight.

Well, I was never FAT, but I did put on about 20 extra pounds (which I recently lost, yay) through the first 3.5 years of college. Not that much for a 6'2'' guy.

I think it was a combination of getting less exercise - I was used to having soccer practice 5 days a week in high school, but didn't do any dedicated exercise in college - and being overly comfortable with my relationship. Leaving that relationship was kind of what got me kick-started to lose those 20 pounds in about 3 months :D

Beer and alcoholix beverages can have alot to do with it too. I find it soo funny that chicks at the bar will be watching their figure but then order a Long Island Iced Tea that has a ton of calories.

good for you.
i think often times, after finding a mate and getting comfortable, we become complacent and let ourselves go.
breaking up, esp. if dumped, is a great motivator to kick yourself back into shape.
i was in a similar position, except i didn't get fat. i just lost all muscle and definition.

Eh, that certainly contributes, but it's completely possible to drink whatever you want a few nights a week and still maintain (or lose) weight. That's one of the things I wasn't willing to sacrifice when I was losing weight.

No vodka waters for me, please.

I think that beer is my biggest problem. I go to the gym about 3 times a week and do cardio, and the best i can do is stay in my mediocre shape. If i cut beer out though I would definitely start to shape up and look real good. but that's really tough to do.

Going from biking to work every morning and back home at the end of the day, while working a physical job, to driving to work in a car then sitting at a desk all day. I used to be able to eat 4000 calories a day and still lose weight, now if I eat 3000 calories in a day I gain weight.

It's one of the reasons I wish that more cities in the US were bicycle friendly; if we didn't have cars to take us everywhere I guarantee the fat epidemic in the US would go away pretty damn quick. Instead we have the current situation, where in many cities it's outright dangerous to bike around (I was hit by a car, while totally following the road rules and having the right of way, by some 73 year old man that didn't know what he was doing / wasn't paying attention).

--edit---
My bike trip to work took approximately 40 minutes to get there, and another 40 minutes to get back. So that's close to 1 1/2 hours of biking a day, every work day.

Drinks as a whole are a large part of why people gain more weight than they think they should. Beer, soda, juice (aka soda with vitamin C)...all very high in calories and/or sugar.

Well you said this to your GF:
i asked her how it happened. how did she let herself go?
did she not own any mirrors? did she not notice her clothes were getting tight?

Pretty harsh for her just gaining 20 lbs. Surprised she didn't dump you :p - I guess she gains 20 lbs and all of a sudden you're dating Kristie Alley
