Fat burners... worth it?

I'm in the process of working out (starting up again after a LONG hiatus due to work) and primarily my goal is to lose some weight that I've put on eating fast food every few days -- it has wreaked some havoc on my body 🙂

Anyhoo... I'm doing straight cardio right now (5 days) but I am not 100% sure on how to go about losing the most weight while keeping some muscle. Cardio seems the best idea but if I couple that with a fatburner, will that help me a lot?

Any help here is appreciated 🙂

i used to take Ripped Fuel before playing basketball just for the caffeine kick. 🙂

regarding fat burning and muscle building, from what i've gathered, it's difficult to do both effectively. i've been recommended to do them in cycles. so right now i've layed off the weight lifting and focused on cardio to lose some left over fat. once i get to where i want, i'll most likely drop most of the cardio and focus on weight lifting.

Most of them just cause massive water loss which is BAD FOR YOU. You might lose weight, but you'll feel like sh1t in the process and there's a high chance you'll gain it all back once you quit the stuff.
Start working a lifting routine into your workout. Increased muscle mass = Increased metabolism = You naturally burning more calories.
Cut back on processed carbs and watch out for starches (potatoes and white rice). Keep your protein high. Don't worry about fat like you're a 16 year old girl but DO cut out all the fast food.

Yea, I was working on project for the last 3 months where I worked 60 hours a week, and I was also overseas on part of it... was a killer. Now my pants are getting tight and it's annoying. I don't have a big gut or anything, but I'm 6 feet and 200lbs... I want to get down to 180 or so 🙂

if you want to lose 20 lbs of fat, i'd think cardio will do you more good than heavy weight lifting right now. once you lose that excess fat, you could get into a weight lifting regimen.

i'm no expert, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

Look into low GI carbs. Not all carbs are bad. Not all fats are bad. Some do wonders for you body.

Just because it's not fast food doesn't automatically mean it's better for you.

Protein, nuts, and whole grains (from fruits, vegetables, whole grain bread) should be a large part of your diet.

Fat burners, in my opinion, are for the lazy - people who want a quick pill fix. The majority of them are stimulants or amphetamines which raise your heart rate to abnormal levels, thus burning off fat (theoretically). As you guessed, this isn't a good thing. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk to the corner store instead of taking your car.

Changing small parts of your life adds up, and with additional cardiovascular workouts you will improve your heart's strength AND lose weight - without a pill which could take a toll down the road.

Edit: I am an advocate of straight-up old-fashioned ways to lose weight - good diet and exercise. Exercise, too many vegetables, whole grains and good home-cooked food never killed anybody.

not necessarily true. i've found that eating more small, healthy snack during the day helps keep me full and more resistant to eating junk food. i'd say:

eat better, work out more 🙂

Don't waste your money on fat burners, the ones you can get in store anyways. If you can get your hands on some real fat burners, then that's cool, just make sure you know what your doing 🙂 Other then that, I recommend you drink a lot of Red Tea or Coffee before your workouts (especially cardio) as they will increase your heart rate and boost your metabolism. Green Tea is also good to process your meals faster.

"Real" fat burners? *whahhh???*

Anyhoo.. I think I will do cardio mixed with light weights for 5 days a week. Nothing serious on the weights, just something to give my muscles a bit of tone before I look like an "Ethernopian" kid 🙂

It's not that simple for a couple reasons.

One, if you eat the wrong type of foods, it's awfully hard to resist eating more calories than you need. If you ate white flour, HFCS, sugar based products, you're likely going to go over (some people are able to do this like my brother, but for most people, you'll gain weight).

Further, if he doesn't eat enough protein/fats, he's going to lose a lot of muscle during his fat loss.

on top of that, starving yourself while working out will make you extremely hungry, and more prone to binge eating.
