No, really. What the hell's wrong with him?? He NEVER exercises, and NEVER stops eating. He's 5'5" and about 170lbs. Dear god he looks awful. After every meal, he'll run to the fridge to see "what's next", whether it'd be drinks, desserts, junk food, etc. Even after he finishes a meal and I come home with takeout, he'd start digging into that. I'm like WTH you just finish dinner!

Really, what's with people like him? Will it kill him to stop eating once in a while? I don't think it's because he's hungry (god, how can he be if he's eating all the time!), but more of a habit? I mean, holy batman, look at his belly and his legs! Neck? What neck??! OK, now I'm exaggerating :p

I don't get it. I just don't.

Quit judging him and try to get out with him either by running, playing ball or just going out.

there's this one incredibly obese guy at my community college that I see every once in awhile. I feel so bad because he can't really walk straight and it's obvious he's having problems.

:(

I could never let myself go like that. (Not that I'm in great shape now, but jeez!)

The family's spoken to him many times about it. If he doesn't have to will to help himself, no one else can help him. He's an adult, not a kid. We can't hold his hand or tell him what to do all the time. He knows what's good and what's not good for him. He's just lazy. Being busy is no excuse. No time? Make time. I work 7 days a week straight with two jobs and I happen to find time.

It just boggles my mind how some people can do this to themselves.

Ha...if people judged more I think we would have less fat-people in the world.

There IS a difference being naturally large and getting fat by being lazy and eating all the time.

i kinda think people who eat way too much are exhibiting symptoms of deeper problems, like they have no self-control, are easily addicted, or are eating as a way to deal with something. that's assuming they're not lazy and do care how they look and how healthy they are. either way, when i look at a fat person, my initial impression is that they have mental problems.

Maybe your brother is really depressed. I know that I was when I gained weight. I started gaining weight in high school and by 18 I weighted 245 lbs. I'm 5'6. Only recently, since graduating from College have I started to lose weight. I'm 25 and weigh 204 today, but I'm still 60lbs from a healthy weight, and the damage done to my body is irreversible.

As I look back, I think that if someone close to me had taken an interest in my life, and offer to help me and be my friend, maybe it wouldn't have taken me 10 years to feel good about myself and start losing weight. Instead of posting asshat threads on ATOT, why don't you try to be a friend to your brother? TELL him that you are concerned about his weight. TELL him that you care about him, and then be his friend and help him with his problem. Ask him if he would be interested in working out with you. Offer to go with him to a gym. Think of some activities he might want to do, like riding bikes around the neighborhood.

This is an opportunity for you to help change the course of your brother's life, and enhance the quality of both your lives for years to come. Don't miss it.

Fine post with great advice.

You need to help him no matter the circumstance. He's your damn brother and that's an amazing relationship to have with someone. The bonds you make during your lifetime are completely irreversible, so make sure you're there for him and help.

damn. I'm 5'9" and was 130lb when I graduated high school and I was damn skinny. I'm 190lb now though. I've been told all my life that I don't look as heavy as I am. I guess it's because of my build. Very wide shoulders and a thick chest. Just 8 weeks ago I was 210lb. Been dieting and exercising since. I look pretty trim now for 190.

He's not depressed from what I can tell. He has a g/f and talks and laughs with her all the time. I'm thinking more along the lines of addiction to food in general more than anything else.

As I look back, I think that if someone close to me had taken an interest in my life, and offer to help me and be my friend, maybe it wouldn't have taken me 10 years to feel good about myself and start losing weight. I've tried. He doesn't listen or considers anybody's advice to him. I mean really, what else can one say or do to get him to take action? You tell me. I'm clueless. He's a grown man. He's aware how this will negatively impact him years down the road.

Like I say, people like him boggle my mind.

Dr. Smooth, thankyou for your automated response. You may leave now. Exit's just over ---->

He's my brother, I believe I understand more about him and his daily life than you do.

Standard response of people who are not, in any way, pleasing to the eye. The world judges people on appearance. Get used to it sparky. The sooner you figure that out the better off you'll be.
