A study claims that starving is as beneficial as reducing caloric intake. Somehow it dosent make sense, since if you starve yourself, you'll just gorge on the next meal. I've heard that this is harmful and can actually lead to weight gain.

Fasting as beneficial as counting calories

Do you guys agree/disagree ?

Yes, you dont have to, but the urge will be too great to resist for most people.

I saw a study done on the Vietnam POW's in the early nineties that showed they were healthier than average Americans at that time. Most of them suffered long term starvation. The conclusion was there are benefits to starvation.

Mattson is a big proponent of reduced-calorie diets having a range of benefits like increased lifespan. The only problem thus far is that humans live so damn long there aren't any conclusive studies of whether the data from mice applies to humans. Obviously, a lot of people are shortening their lives by being fat bastards, but it remains to be see whether being much thinner than average will have the opposite effect.

Ok, I meant to say fasting. I'm not saying that I dont think it'll work, but its a bit extreme in my opinion.

Doing it for half a day everyday for a month helps your digestive tract and your overall health,
according to my health teacher.

Since we are living in a world that is completely unnatural in terms of food availability, I would not be suprised if the human body benefits from limited occasional caloric restriction. We were designed to cope with irregular meals

Personal experience - if you fast on a fairly regular basis, you tend to notice more when you feel full, preventing you from eating to the point where you're stuffed. You also learn that it's not bad to feel hunger - Americans tend to eat like feeling hunger is a condition that should be immediately rectified.
