Hi:
I want to set up a faster local network for a Windows 8.1 laptop. My modem is a Windstream (the DSL provider) Sagem 1704N combination modem router. http://support.sagemcom.com/site/livret/RM_253272861A_Fast_1704_ENG.pdf

I am considering one of these routers.

I D-Link AC 3200 ultra Wi-Fi router http://ca.dlink.com/products/connect/wireless-ac3200-tri-band-gigabit-router/

II Asus AC3200 Ultra Wi-Fi Router http://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RTAC3200/

1 My W8.1 laptop uses an Intel Duel Band Wireless AC7260 which is 802.11ac. Could this be one of the early ACs that would not match the speed of an additional 802.11ac USB Wi-Fi adapter.

2 Is the 2nd wave in use, yet? I’m not sure what that is but I believe it relates to faster hardware and a faster, 802.11 AC protocol. I didn’t note that anything was advertised as a wave 2 device.

3 Are the above routers wave 2? Will faster routers be available this summer? The more I read the more confused I become.

I will greatly appreciate any comments or advice. Please indicate if you believe a better way to achieve the fastest local throughput.

Not sure by your post what you plan on actually using this for? You listed DSL so I hope you understand, your internet will be your bottleneck, no matter what wireless you use. Going with more advanced wireless will ONLY help your internal speeds when it comes to large file transfers and streaming media.

Having said that, most people I encounter that want to spend 300-500 on this high end equipment, only end up doing internet type content on it anyway and occasionally transferring word, excel and low speed media to/from a laptop. They're basically wasting their money.

Make sure you actually have a need for this to justify the investment. As far as the next gen tech for AC wireless, it's still being developed by alot of Mfr's and basically just utilizes multiple spectrum slots for transfers.

Thank you, Yes, I understand we are talking only about the speed of the LAN.

I would mark this question solved but I don't see how to do that.

I appreciate your response.

Also, of the two router's you linked to, I would vote for the Asus router. I'm not a fan of Dell router's and have three Asus router's - all work, just have upgraded myself.
