Fastest program for transferring files over the internet?

What is the best way of transfering files between two computers on the internet? I want something that's faster than using ICQ, but does not involve setting up an ftp server. I have tried PCAnywhere file transfer, but found it way too slow and crash prone? Any other good programs i am missing?

I'm confused, I don't see how a new program would result in a faster transfer rate?

I am looking for something that won't crash all the time..just a simple computer to computer file transfer over the internet...
