A friend of mine wants to upgrade his Abit BX-6 (R1) with a new processor. He currently has a Celeron 266 running at 450. What is the best option for upgrading to a faster processor? I see Celeron II 900 for sale for about $50. I think that would run, as it has a 100 MHz FSB. Any others he should consider? What is the absolute fastest he could get? And what are the highest FSB and multipliers that board supports?

Thanks for the info!

I just put a C900 in a BX6 R1. I set it for 112 FSB, 1008 MHz. The BIOS is a bit funky. It reports it as a PIII 952EB or something like that, but that is just cosmetic. Max BIOS multiplier is 8, but it doesn't matter since it is locked. The system runs perfectly. You can run a C900-1100, or a PIII 100 MHz FSB CPU up to 1100 MHz as well. C900 is a good bang for the $$.

I did the same thing on an older pre-133fsb VIA board. This c900 reports as "978MHz P!!!". I was just trying to get to around 1GHz, so this misreport is no big deal. Its a nice cheap way to get a GHz machine. ;)

Funny, though, the c566 @850MHz runs pretty well neck and neck with this new setup. I'm tempted to switch to a 1.1GHz P!!! because I think this setup is L2 cache starved. The 128k of the celeron is definitely a liabilty to performance compared to the P!!!'s 256k L2 cache.
