I've heard nothing but good things about the 640GB WD caviar blacks for speed.

I have a 7200.12 500GB as the boot drive for my HTPC and as a Games drive on my main machine (300GB Velociraptor is the boot drive). I am so far exceedingly happy with the performance of the 7200.12 in both applications.

the WD Blacks... but the raptor is much faster in random access, which is what really matters

DOH, ExcaliburMM... exposed!

I actually did forget, and people were not exactly clear in that topic, or at least not as clear as they are here.

So its between the 7200.12 500GB and the WD 640GB Black. Hmm.
No it's not between those two... Buy the 640GB WD "Black"

Let's keep it moving people, there's nothing to see here

From most benchs i have seen the WD black 640 wins in random seek time and the seagate 7200.12 winds in read/write speed. I own a 7200.12 500GB as well as the 1TB model and i can tell you they are fast drives. The 500GB drive is slightly faster than the 1TB.

OS drive = 640GB WD "Black"
Storage = 1TB WD "Black"

I just ordered a WD Black Caviar 500GB, it has 32MB of cache versus the 16MB of cache found in the smaller Seagate 'Cuda. I don't really need a HUGE hard drive and if necessary, I can always buy the 1TB+ in the future at a lower price. It seems storage gets cheaper over time.

The last time I went on a hunt for the "fastest" non-SCSI drive, I ended up with the IBM Desktar 75GXP. That ended up badly but I did get some money back from the class action lawsuit.

The Seagate Cheetah 15K.7 drive delivers the highest performance of any 3.5-inch drive. Reliability: 0.55% AFR / 1.6M hours MTBF
