Size isn't that big of an issue, anything 30+ GB will be more than enough. Laptops are notorious for having slow hard drives. I got a P3 500 Dell Latitude CPx from work, it has 512 MB RAM, modular CD-ROM, Zip250, floppy, two batteries, everything, but the only thing that bothers me (that I can upgrade at least) is the hard drive. It's bearable but I'd like faster.

It's not a desktop replacement; it's a desktop supplement for college next year, so I'll keep it for a year and tolerate a P3 500 - it's not going to be running Counterstrike so it doesn't matter.

Who makes the fastest laptop hard drive out there?

Most drives spin at like 4400rpm. I think IBM has a travelstar drive that spins at 5400rpm, and it's supposedly really fast for a lappy, but I haven't done any research. And yes, the drive is from IBM, so it may not be very reliable, especially if they borrowed 75gxp technology to make the travelstar drives.

Toshiba has the only 9.5mm 5400rpm mobile HDD on the market, and that's what you will need with the CPx laptop.

John -

Where can I read up on mobile hard drive form factors? This is my first experience with a laptop at a hardware level.

IBM also has a 5400 9.5mm laptop drive, the 40GNXR and it is shipping to oem's as we speak. IBM and Toshiba have not yet hit the streets with these little scooters. I'm waiting on the 40 Gigger from IBM :) Sweat Spanking :)
