and of course you can fork out some cash for a 74GB Raptor (not quite 80gb, but it's the fastest on the market)

Indeed the fastest, I own 2 SATA versions but beware there has been some noise issues which I beleive has been sixed with software which I haven't tried yet. They come with 3 yr warrantty's from the Egg and can be had for less than $1US per Gig

I don't know about the noise issue. I heard about it, and I do own a SATA version of the drive and it is completely silent. Acoustic Management appeared to be disabled by default when I looked at it recently and it wasn't loud still. I haven't heard any noise from the drive, exception for a clunk I heard ONCE. As for the noise you talk of, I have no idea how they could get that. I have recommended it to more than 10 people and none of them, when I asked over time, said that it emitted a hitch-pitched noise from it occaisonally. I bought my drive in December too, by the way.

Definitely buy the Deskstar 7K250 drive...you will be glad you did, 0JK0.

can anyone show me the link on newegg.com to Deskstar 7K250 drive...I can't really find it there??

The reason why i don't wanna but the SATA version of the hard drive is because i have issues with my current Seagate 80GB 7200RPM SATA Hard Drive.
I think my mobo (ASUS A7N8X-Deluxe rev.1.03) just doesn't get on wit this drive.. maybe is the driver issue but i can't solve it so i'm buying new drive

NewEgg only has the 2mb cache version
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-145-041&depa=0

ZipZoomFly also only has the 2mb cache version

The PATA IDE 80GB Hitachi 7K250's are limited to a 1 year warranty while larger capacity comes with 3 years.

Is it Maxtor 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model 6Y080P0 orWestern Digital 80GB 7200RPM IDE Hard Drive, Model WD800JB?

I've both also. The Maxtor is faster.

Newegg is awesome. I have some recent details regarding a customer service encounter for you man.

It doesn't matter if Maxtor comes out on top in some things, overall I would agree with THG that the Deskstar 7K250 is the fastest and I can tell the difference. 0JK0, you can't forget about that 3-year warranty either. I bought a barebones Deskstar 7K250 and I still have the three year warranty :D. Not to mention that I've waited no longer than 3 minutes each time I called Hitachi GST with a question.

The latest one was to switch my SATA drive to PATA because that Silicon Image controller really sucks. I mean, in XP it is OK but I use linux primarily and the drivers for that controller are terrible, and I often take things off of that XP-only drive. I've used my friend's Deskstar 7K250 PATA version with the same 8mb cache and it is as fast as, if not faster than, the Serial ATA version. Of course, it should be like that since they use a bridge on the SATA drive :p. I got my response almost exactly 24 hours after I called to ask about that, and a guy named Adam from the warranty department called to say that I can make the switch.

He said that I need to send in the Proof of Purchase first, and they emailed me with the fax # and other details for it. Fantastic service is the correct description of their customer service. I think what I like the most is that their support centers are NOT outsourced to India. When I called, I got a guy from Rochester, Minnesota (I am in Minnesota as well) and he definitely knew what he was talking about. He was not reading out of a book at all on my questions, and understood the acronyms and everything. I also like the fact that my drive doesn't need to be shipped out of state to get a replacement, so i'm sure it will go fast.

The drives are very reliable and fast, but you should take into account their service if you ever have a problem. I have talked to others with the same experiences too, so that is great.

I am very pleased to hear they will switch it, because my friend couldn't get Maxtor to do the same thing. That dashed my hopes of having it done...until now :D.
