So, my boss has told me that, although not officially official, I should be on full time hours within 2 weeks (currently only working 20 hrs/wk), so it is time to start getting the PC upgrades that I have been putting off.

Namely;
New Monitor (Probably either a 21" 1920*1080, or a 24" 1920*1200)
New Hard drive (1.5TB)
New Graphics Card (???)
New Case (Coolermaster 590, Tyranicus has same, and it is fantastic for the price)
MAYBE New Mobo (Gigabyte P45-UD3P, want me some more SATA ports and onboard Firewire... w00t)

What I am really wondering about is what is the most powerful card I can get for a Hackintosh for under $200? Preferably one where it is not >$200 after rebate, I don't mind rebates, I just don't want to initially pay $250 or something and then have to wait 2 months to get my money back :disgust:

Since the main point of the new card will be to help drive the new monitor, it will probably be purchased after so I can see how well my existing 7800GTX does with it and the games I play. So right now, just looking for recommendations, fully aware that once 10.5.7 drops the whole field might change, and of course prices will shift between now and then, that's fine, just need an idea of what is currently the best card in that price range. 9800GTX+, 4870, 4890? GTX 260?

I'm wondering the same, although my 7900GT plays the games I want at 1920x1200 (TF2 mainly).

I was thinking of one of the newer ATIs (4770x2 is it?) that seems pretty competitive, but don't know if it will definitively work in OSX as well.

I would avoid any Nvidia GT200-series and ATI 4000-series until 10.5.7 drops and Nvidia releases their drivers for the Quadro.

For now, I'd recommend a 1GB GT250 (rebadged 9800). They go for $150 - $200.

Eh, it's due any day now. Wait a week and then make the purchase. There's no sense in not going for a GT200 or HD4800 card with the monitor he has and the price he wants.

Well, if anything I might pull the trigger in about a month, I have a vacation at the beginning of June and I don't want to mess that up by getting too many things :)

Besides, the loan companies (stinkin Sallie Mae) do like to be paid on time :roll:

What game on a Mac would require more than a GT250? Are you dual booting this with Windows?

Yea, almost all my gaming takes place in Windows, plus the larger monitor I intend to buy.

I should have stated before, that I have no qualms with buying previous gen stuff. I got my 6800 when the 7 series was out, got my 7 series when the 8 series was out (in the case of both they were used), so I don't mind it since I don't tend to play the games that require the most oomph (crysis, farcry, things of that nature)
