Fastest EIDE hd: IBM 60GXP, 75GXP, or neither

Alright, I'm putting together a "budget" video editing machine for a friend (well doing the research and we're both putting it together) and he needs the fatest possible EIDE hard drive (doesn't want to pay for SCSI).

From what I've read the 75GXP is the fatest, however the 60GXP didn't appear in the lineups I've seen so I'm assuming its newer. The 60GXP is rated at 40MB/s sustained transfer while the 75GXP is rated at 37MB/s. All other specs appear the same. Is the 60GXP newer and faster?

And are there any other new hard drives that have hit the market that are even better? Afterall, some of these reviews I've read might be a little dated.

The plan in the end is to purchase two 30GB drives and run RAID 0 using the Promise controller on the Asus A7V133A motherboard. Other specs include 1.4GHz Athlon, 512MB CAS2 SDRAM (can't find the perfect DDR mb yet), and firewire for digital video editing. Of course, the machine will be running Win2000 Pro.

Oh yah before anyone flames you for IDE raid0. It works pretty good for digital video editing.

well I figured if the IDE RAID didn't work out he could always split the drives and have two 30GB's. Do you have any experience with it TunaBoo? I know my friend has a lot of professional quality equipment and has done video editing with his current computer (800MHz P3, 128MB RAM) but find the task is way too slow and hd intensive. Especially when rendering titles and graphics...

What do you think about the onboard Promise IDE RAID controller on the Asus A7V133A mb? And for what he's doing do you think DDR DRAM would be better? We already completely ruled out RDRAM and a P4 system even though it probably would have had more bandwidth.

I found a 40GB 60GXP for only a few dollars more than the same price as a 30GB 75GXP - cool

I've had both a 15G 75GXP and a 40G 60GXP in my system....both running of the Promise ATA100 built into my A7V. The 60GXP averaged about 5-10MB/s faster overall, depending on the position. I think the average was about 7MB/s faster on the 60GXP. Also, from what I've heard, it's more reliable.

The 60GXP hasn't been out long enough for people to know whether it suffers from the same problems as the 75GXP.

I say go for something tried-and-true like the Quantum Fireball Plus LM. Old yes, but it can still roast all of today's 7200rpm HD's including the IBMs. Good luck finding it though.

60GXP is the fastest.

If you can handle the noise, yes, the Quantum LM is probably just as fast when it comes to normal computing.

60GXP has been out at least 4 months (forgot date). 75 started failing WELL before that. I was one of the first people to get a 60GXP.

Yah 60GXPs are nice for video encoding, I do a lot these days.

My 60 GB 75gxp is going bad after just 6 months. I just ordered a new 60GB 60 gxp and I hope it is of better quality!! It's time to RMA the 75gxp.

I think the newer Quantum Fireball AS is just as fast but is also one of the quieter drives around.

In any event, it seems that the IBM 60GXP is overall the fastest drive right now. But the Barracuda IV from seagate seems like it will be the fastest AND quietest. Anybody know the release date of this?

Personally, my main hard drive is an IBM 75GXP 45GB. I have not had any problems thus far, and the drive is plenty fast.

Nope, the Fireball Plus LM *roasts* the AS and gives the 75GXP/60GXP a run for their money.

This is with regards to IOMeter performance.

The Barracuda IV looks promising, but I don't think it'll beat the 60GXP/75GXP/Plus LM in IOMeter performance.

Are you serious? So the Fireball plus lm is a better buy than the 60gxp IBM? Any issues w/ this drive? Is it of good quality?

No one has any actual facts eh?
You all just guessing? This is exactly the kind of question that Storage Review is all about.

Go here to see the leader board, and SR's recommended HD's.

Another great tool is the Data Base You can use that to compare drives.
(BTW looks like that Quantum LM is fast)

IDE raid works damn good for video editing.

I had two OLD HD's (4.3 gig maxtors from like 1998) hooked up and could play video that was 20 megs per second flawlessly.

I have the Fireball LM 20GB, and it is fast but VERY loud, as LocutusX mentioned. It runs extremely cool, and I've had absolutely no problems with it for almost 1 year now. But just re-iterate... the thing is LOUD! No exaggerations...

I'm surprised that their newer drive is slower! I guess they were only concerned about the acoustics of the drive.

60GXP is newer and I think has better quality than 75GXP that fails a lot.
It also has a higher platter density which means more performance
and faster access time.

Obviously, where do you think I get my information from? :p
