What brand is the fastest DVD reader/ripper?

I'm currently using some LG IDE DVD drives. Unforunately, they seem to start ripping at 2.7x on a DVD-R containing video.

If I remember, Samsung SATA drives started ripping faster.

I've recently replaced my old DVD burner with an ASUS SATA drive that seems to rip a whole lot faster than my old one. Haven't check actual times or speed when ripping but it seemed to be done much quicker.

You want a drive that either does not have any riplock, or which you can get community firmware (or a patching program) to disable it. The speeds will still vary, and you'll only see the stated speed on well-balanced discs, at the edge of the disc, but you should typically end up with way more than 2-3x, even at the center. Also, as a rule, newer drives (generally not IDE) tend to be faster.

I actually had speedpatched 1.05 firmware on there before, and it was faster. I updated to 1.06 firmware, and didn't speedpatch it.

I just dug out my speedpatcher, ran it on the 1.06, and installed it. Now ripping starts at 6.8x. Guess I solved it. :)

Edit: Went from an average read rate of 4.0x to 10.7x.
