Fastest CPU on K7S5A?

Will a 2200XP run on a K7S5A with the stock Bios. I've had some problems flashing my bios, and I don't have enough money for a full upgrade right now...so I thought I'd bump my current 1700 to a 2000 or a 2200.

Any ideas?
 
It does depend on the bios revision as well as the board revision. Iirc the shipping bios on all of those board will accept a 2200+
 
With the lastest bios update, the board can run up to a 2600+. Keep in mind that you have to find the 2600+ that has the 266 FSB, not the one w/ 333 FSB
 
I'm not sure what bios I have, but I flashed it to the newest bios last summer, and it wouldn't get past post. I flashed it back, and it works...so I'd rather just avoid that all together. I plan on building a new rig in 6 months or so, so this is just a stop gap solution to give me a tad better performance.

From what I read, I think you need a bios update to run a 2400 and up.

It officially supports up to 2600+ 266FSB, but those cpu's are somewhat difficult to find at a good price. A 2400+ would be a more viable solution.

However with the Honey or other overclockers bios you can run up to 166FSB and some people have had limited success doing so with the 333 chips.
 
This is from the K7S5A faq(http://www.ocworkbench.com/2002/ecs/k7s5aguide/BIOS%20FAQ.htm):

4. What BIOS works with the Athlon XP?

Although any of the K7S5A BIOS versions work with the Athlon XP processors, only 010911 (and later) BIOS revisions will correctly recognize and display it as an Athlon XP. I recommend you upgrade your BIOS if you plan on using any of the new processors. Bios?s dated from 020809 support the XP2400+ and XP2600+ processors.

So it looks like I'm probably SOL as far as a 2400+ with the stock BIOS. I'm not at home right now, but I'll check and see what BIOS I have when I get there.

Well crap, it looks like I'm running the BIOS from 8/29/01, which appears to be the second release. Will I have to upgrade it, regardless? If so, which version do you guys recommend?
 
Cheapo Bios works for me.
Beware there are 4 Different version of K7S5a.
Make sure you know which motherboad you have and don't flash the wrong one this time.

with luck, socket pin mods/bridge mods u can get 2.4ghz+ i did it to a 2000+@2.4ghz(socket pin mods) and now a mobilebarton at 2.24ghz😛 (socket pin mod for volts, bridge mod for err multiplier ..the higher ones) both at 1.85v pr rating of err who knows.. 3200? atleast... the nonbartons are now more locked then b4 from what i remember. only mobile barts work for this kinda stuff now.

so its possible to get this pos board to do some nifty things.

its not plug and play at all, so u'd have to look into it quite a bit. overclockers.com and its forums are a good place to search. i use the honeyxbios. theres a 166mhz bus hardwarebug, so dont even pretend its possible. some can get to it through software fsb changers, but thats luck of the draw.
 
I have two K7S5A 2200+ based systems.

You can likely still stick a 2400 in it with the stock BIOS and have it run fine, it'll just run it as a 2200+ with some extra L2 (I think L2 was the only significant difference IIRC).

You must be thinking of the Barton mobile chips - the 2400+ was just like the 2200+, but 133mhz faster.

It will run any desktop athlon that was released with a 266 fsb. I was going to suggest the newer durons as cheap 266 chips for this motherboard, though I'm not positive they are supported.
 
I would certainly think that by far the best option would be to get a 35W Mobile 2200 or 2400. You get the nice Barton core, you get an incredible overclocker, and you get a CPU that will run at 12.5 * 133 = 1667 or 13.5 * 133 = 1800, respectively, without overclocking.

I would still check out the Cheapo BIOS or an older overclocker BIOS so you can change the multiplier, though. Either of those CPU's should be able to run at 16.5 * 133 = 2200 if there's such thing as a 16.5 multiplier.
 
Not really looking to overclock. I'll probably just buy a 2200 and pop it in. If I have any problems I'll flash the bios and go from there.
 
i had a 2400 mobile running at 2.3 in a K7S5A pro with newest honey-x bios. someone told me on arstechnica that it only runs half of the cache on the k7s5a (128 instead of 256 or something) so I got a new board.
