I've got a Socket 5 motherboard that has a P200MMX OverDrive chip in it. I've heard that some K6-2 chips are pin-compatible with Socket 5. What's the fastest CPU I can put in this kind of socket? I think it puts out 5V or something, but the OverDrive chip has some voltage regulator that knocks it down to 3.3V.

You are going to hear this again but why not let your P200 die a respectable death and just upgrade to a decent PII or Athlon compatible motherboard. Fry's Electronics has a FIC AZ11 + Duron 750Mhz CPU for $99. Don't tell me that's too much and it is considerably faster than any P5 class processor.

Some people, like myself, become very attached to their PCs! You should see the pain I went through when I threw out my Gateway 386SX-16. It was a sad day to see the garbageman haul it away.

I upgraded my PC last year with a new HDD, IDE controller and an OverDrive chip. Total cost: $200...and it has let me put off a new system purchase by a full 12+ months. I've got plenty of money, but I just like my (admittedly slow) PC.

So much for that...I determined I have a genuine Intel motherboard. As a result, I can't use a AMD K6-2/3 CPU without a special 3rd party BIOS upgrade. It's not worth the bother or expense.

Hmmmm, a real Intel motherboard (430FX Triton I). This darn thing is so stable. I hope I don't shoot myself in the foot when I get an Athlon 4 system.
