Fastest CPU for Asus P2B

I am looking to upgrade my cpu, and was wondering what is the fastest cpu that will work with my Asus P2B mobo. I think it can only go to p3 600 but I am not sure. Can a coppermine run on it? Thanks for the help,

Mikelpsx 🙂

If your P2B's PCB rev is 1.12, then it has support for the Coppermine, as long as you have the latest BIOS.

If you have an earlier revision, then your P2B can be made to work with FC-PGA Coppermines. With older boards, the lowest voltage they can provide is 1.80 volts, not the 1.65 Coppermines want. You can run a Coppermine safely on 1.80volts. To do this, you need an FC-PGA P3 with a slotket, manually setting the voltage on the slotket to 1.80 volts. This will work. And remember to upgrade to the latest BIOS.

Since the P2B does not officially support 133MHz FSB, you can use up to P3-850. Mutliplier is not an issue since it is ignored. If you want to try the 133MHz FSB setting, then you risk running AGP out of spec.

Hope this helps.

Yes and no. You CAN use lower voltages on the more recent pre-1.12 boards (with BIOS 1011 or 1012). I've tested mine down to 1.5 V with a Celemine, but I'm running 1.8 V, only because that's the voltage I need to hit 880 MHz. However, take heed of what Andy says... don't count on being able to go below 1.8 V. So, whatever you do, don't get a Slot 1 CPU, since the voltage setting is locked. Get yourself an FC-PGA PIII running at FSB 100, with a good slocket with Vcore jumpers.

It would help if you could tell us what revision of P2B you have. It should be printed between the PCI or ISA slots. I am running 1.10, but Coppermine works with 1.02 and up.

Cheers!
