Hello,

Does anyone know how to determine the fastest CPU that can be used in an Acer Aspire 7110 computer?

The current CPU is a P II 350.

Thanks.

a friend of mine is running a pIII 450 and also ran a 633 celeron in an abit slotket
the only problem is the bios was written for PII not PIII and you have to hit a key to continue booting up. his board is marked V66M

you could prolly run any PII on that without a problem.
Avoid AMD - over-rated and they have fools believe they are good.

RPB,

Thanks for the info.

Am I correct in assuming that the PIIIs are clock multiplier locked so all my brother should have to do is plug in the faster PIII?

Also, if he were to install a celeron with a slotket converter, would the celeron modify the bus speed, or would it automatically be overclocked 33%?

Thanks.

#1 You can't put an AMD in a slot 1.
#2 Why do you want to avoid AMD? They're cheaper than Intel, and perform the same or better.

Sorry, kind of off topic.

Any PIII should work...

If you want to go faster, you need to look at all the factors
- 128 mb ram or more
- 7200 rpm hard drive - 200mb free
- Then look at upgrading the cpu

The best thing to do would be to check Acers website, though it probably won't tell you. You'll probably have to email them to find out.

using the abit slotket set to auto a celeron 633 ran at the 66mhz frontside bus. the pIII 450 was slot type. there was info on the inside of the case cover also which showed support for both 66 and 100mhz frontside bus. the system will stop on boot and reqiure the press of a key to continue the boot up but it worked fine other than that. a bios upgrade could fix that but acer dosn't seem to have one. yes on the PIII. i would think that any slot PII or PIII that uses the 100mhz frontside bus and a voltage within the range of the PIII 450 would work.

Hi all, thanks for the help. I'm arynn's brother (the one with the Aspire) This thread has been very helpful and has confirmed research I have dug up from other sources. As far as I can tell, I am running Intel 440bx chipset...board is marked V66M, although I can't find any definitive info on the manufacturer or any other board specs. The fsb speed is either 66/100 (depending on processor). I have dip switches to adjust multiplier from 2 - 5.5, although the point is moot since the PIII's are locked. I think I will be fine with a PIII slot 1 at 100 Mhz fsb. I'm looking at PIII/850 Mhz. The only thing I'm not 100% sure of is the lower voltage requirement of PIII's. Research I've been able to dig up so far indicates that PII and later boards have a voltage regulator built in, so the CPU will only draw its required voltage. My understanding is the earlier PII's drew 2v and the later PII's draw 1.8v, and PIII's around 1.65. Still looking a bit further to try to determine if this is the case for sure. Thanks again for all the help.
