Well, I guess the title explains everything. I was doing a DVD backup yesterday, but after new partition I had no software installed to do it. I foiund smartripper and I installed it. I also found flask mpeg 0.594 "vulture" version (specially coded for 3Dnow! by the AMDzone team). The backup wasn't that slow, as my humble AXP 1700+ finished the job at 27 fps, 2 passes with audio.

I was wondering however if thete is anything out there faster. I have read about XMpeg 4.5 being the fastet, but I also know by experience that virtualdub + avisynth is almost as fast and much more flexible (avisynth supports yuy2).

What would be the fastest tool to convert from mpeg2 to DivX????

thanks

IMHO 27fps conversion rate is pretty darned good with your 1700+. I don't get much better than that with my 1800+ and Vidomi.

I need to confess that I am pretty happy with flask 0.594... it is the only one that allowed me to encode the whole DVd extracting the subtitles.... xmpeg allows only one .vob at a time... :(

Maybe you should give that version a try. It is quite old, but still effective. Do you remember the whole mess in THg when the P4 launched and kicked the Athlon butt in flask+divx??? Well, the second revision of that match featured the Athlon murdering the P4 when THg used the reference ieee1180 idtc reference fpu idtc (for max quality). Later, somebody from intel took the flask source code and made the very first application optimized for SSE2 overnight, sent it to THG, and yes, that version flew!

The amdzone team (Alexander Goodrich and somebody else) took the challenge to make a flask version as optimized for 3Dnow! as possible. They released one like 2 weeks later, but even though it was faster it didn't match the SSE2 version. Finally, they made the "vulture" version that was offered to THg for the final match, but that match never took place. Amdzone claimed it would make a 1.2 Tbird beat a 1.5 P4 willamette......

I don't think that claim can be accurate, but the version is sweet and works fast. By the way, that was using "slowest" as the DivX setting. If you use fastest you can gain about 4 fps
