a buddy got a free computer off his brother and he asked if I could upgrade it, it has a GA BX-2000 MB made by gigabyte. I am not to familar with the BX chipset since I have mostly used VIA and I was wondering what the fastest pentium chip is I can put in this for him. thanks

1. Copy/Paste GA BX-2000 into google. 2. Click "search". 3. Click on third link down. 4. Highlight and copy information. 5. Navigate back to this reply and .........

Processor
Intel® Pentium® II / III and Celeron? Processor 233 to 550 MHz

Slot 1 for future Processor support

66/75*/83*/100/112*/124*/133* MHz System Bus

Auto Detect CPU Voltage

Clock multiplier 3.0/3.5 ...... /9.5
(paste)
Took a heck of a lot longer to write this reply than it did to find the answer. YMMV :D

I should add that it has a slotket right now running a celeron 450. he wants to upgrade as cheap as possible (don't we all)

I found all that info already, but thanks for your reply. would it depend on the slotket as to whether or not I could go as high as a celeron 1 ghz?

Using the same technique as before but inputting Intel 440BX chipset into the search, I got this page. Looks like you'll need a BIOS upgrade (if it already hasn't had it) and you should probably be OK. It doesn't specify anything over 700mhz but this line:
Fixed CPU clock over 1000Mhz show incorrect
seems to indicate that it will at least identify the cpu correctly.
This is, of course, if it is the model with the "+".

The 440BX chipset is very good and very fast.
I have an old QDI BX board, and with the latest bios and a decent slocket convertor card (with voltage regulators) it runs a Celeron 900mhz coppermine no probs. It would run a max 1.1ghz celeron (coppermine) @100mhz fsb.
Probably no reason yours cant do the same.
Some of the later bx chips gave support for the 133 fsb (unofficially as there is no divider for agp), so you may be able to run up to a p3 1000ghz @ 133 fsb.

Yeah, there are Tualatin adapters out there and they mostly work with BX boards. The safest bets are Coppermine P3s and Celerons though as they are officially supported in most cases.

Hey this is a COOL post as I have an old system with the same Gigabyte Mobo (BX2000) that is pretty much retired. So what is the story with these adapters? I believe the chip in the computer is a PIII 350.....It would be kinda fun to unretire the old machine.

"DAPUNISHER" Your links don't seem to work. Or maybe it's just me?!!?

The links seem to work fine for me. Maybe you could right click on them, select Propreties, click/hold and drag to highlight the link (URL), then right click on the link, select copy, then go up to your address bar and paste it there and hit enter. Long explanation but it will work.

Don't forget, you would be best advised to update to the latest BIOS before trying this. The adapters will be self-explanatory once you get to the page. However, there is some additional info on this page. You might have to do a bit of reading but it may help. I didn't read it all but it sounds like it could help. LMK.

And thanks to Dapunisher for shedding some additionally needed light on this subject.
