Fastest CD-ROM or DVD/CD-ROM

I am going to be dumping my current mobo with built-in SCSI, so I'm going to get rid of my Plextor UltraPlex 40x - it's one of the fastest drives I've ever seen.

What are the fastest CD-ROM / DVD-ROM drives out there (IDE only...) - I want to be able to rip audio as fast or faster than the Plextor. If it's also a DVD reader, that's cool too.

careful... Kenwood CDROM is not produced anymore.. beside it has some problems of reading CDRs

for DVD-ROM.. i think the fastest is LiteOn or ASUS.. well Pioneer has better reading capability but ASUS and LiteOn has fastest audio ripping 🙂

Are there any websites that review this stuff? I just want a good drive that is not laggy like most IDE drives seem to be.

Is it too much to ask?

*sob*

in my eyes .. toshiba sd-m1612 is the best dvd rom at 16x dvd and 48x cd with DVD ram readability unless u guys can find better hehe 😀

EDIT: i dun think the speed is most important compared to DVD RAM readability capability .. i consider the function is important ... u know of any other dvd rom that has this?

I would get the Liteon 16x/48x dvd-rom. Also, get the 165H version. This is the latest. I just got is from newegg.com. It is much nicer than the older 163 and 163d dvd-roms. The older ones slowed down a lot in the middle of software installations and converting to mp3 files. The newer one hardly ever slows down.

Check out next weeks staples ad, they have a rebaggd Lite-On 48x (CeDyne) for $59.99 after rebates and maybe even lower with a coupon. I have this burner, its 48x write/12x re-write/48x read, it also rips audio very fast.

As for dvd, the lite-on 16x is $37 at newegg, search for N82E16827131102 to find it.

There are 3 combo drives out there right now (plextor, toshiba and samsung), they only do one thing, they save you a drive bay, they dont give you performace over other brands.

i bought the bus link rebadged liteon 40x12x48 at staples clearence for 49.90

wahoo!!!!

just be sure it says smartburn on the box not justburn?as that is the aopen model lol
