Define fast.

0-60, 1/4, passing speed acceleration? There's different types of "fast". AWD cars typically launch better and have 0-60 times but will typically be slower in 1/4 speeds.

I would probably say:

Under 20k = SRT-4
Under 25k(ok 25,250) = Mustang GT
Under 30K = Probably the Mustang still
Under 35k = WRX Sti

0-60 time.

That would then be "What's the quickest", not "fastest". :)

Ah, looks like my question's already been answered.

Welp:

motorTrend.com

Take it easy, gentlemen.

I disagree. A new SRT4 will school a beatup STi

You're high on crack.

0-100 FTW.

I'd say 30-60 would be a more practical indicator of how a car will accelerate in everyday use...

Welp, looks like budget isn't MSRP, so you need to define it.

There was a story about an extremely fast Camaro floating around the web that was made up of $10k worth of parts...

Yup...$10k worth of parts and thousands of man-hours worth of labor...

Well, I'd figure what a "beat up" STi is. Turbo in need of repair/replacement, maybe some bad IC hoses. You have to define what "beat up" is.

Also, why not get a beat up SRT4 then drop extra cashola into the car and win!

Please please please can we make this fastest around a track rather than fastest 0-60?

and by track make it one lane dirt road in teh forest :D

Ah, yes, because we frequently find ourselves tearing through one lane dirt roads in the forest as quickly as we can, and rarely accelerate from 0-60 on normal streets... ;)

0-60 depends on how a car is launched and gearing
0-100, or 1/4th mile is a better metric

Only if the OP doesn't care about gas....

EDIT And interior quality. F-bodies are cheap and fast, but I wanted a decent quality car other than the powertrain, thus didn't get an f-body ;)

For new cars you can actually buy for these prices..

under 20k..Chevy Cobalt SS supercharged.
under 25k Mustang GT, or maybe Mazdaspeed3.
under 30k Pontiac GTO
under 35k GTO or STI.

Mustang GT for under $25K? That might be pushing it, and with no options. But point taken nonetheless

Good thread, kind of reaffirms the fact that the WRX is the car to buy.

Only thing holding me back is their crappy resale value...have you seen the going rate for a 4 year old WRX? It's going for like $10-12k. Problem is, it's hard to find one that hasn't been modded (modders usually return the car back to stock when they sell it, so it's hard to tell if it's been modded in its past or not).

Blah. $25k for a new WRX is just crazy though.

Not true. Buy a lincoln Mk VII.

Same chassis driveline, but with a fancy interior.

Also much prettier on the outside.

REMEMBER THIS IS FOR NEW CARS.

I wish I could represent my SRT-4 but I cant.

under 20k Chevy Cobalt SS Supercharged
under 25k Mustang GT
under 30k Evo RS
under 35k Evo MR or STI

Mazdaspeed 3 doesnt live up to the hype when they are hitting low 14's and Mustangs are hitting mid 13's

Same chassis/driveline as what? Not the F-Body. And while I agree they are sleek and nice, they can't take a turn worth a sh!t.

See my highlighted edits above

Mazdaspeed3 is a four-door hatch, Mustang GT is a coupe. I wouldn't put them in the same category

$25K for a new WRX is fine, esp the Limited, but insurance is KILLER on all Impreza's.

Get a Legacy GT if you want that, around $26K OTD. Doesn't handle as well out of the box, but 250HP!

EDIT Resale on the WRX's must be crappy 'cuz of how they are beat to death. Resale on Legacy's is pretty good

You have to stick with new because if we go by used, Corvette would be faster than any of the above and you can get high mileage used C5 Z06 for under 20k.

Um, no. No ZO6 is under $20K. And I don't think you can get ANY C5 Vette for under $20K. Please don't open your mouth if you don't know what you're talking about.
