Fastest AGP out there?

My 9800 Pro just isn't cutting it. 1700 on 3DMark05. So, since I'm not in the mood to upgrade the mobo and CPU as well, what's the best-performance AGP card out there?

Just curious, but what CPU drives your AGP based system? If you are running an AXP, for example, the X850XTPE AGP and 6800U AGP are going to make that CPU into an extreme bottle neck.

If you can shell out over 600 USD for a top of the line AGP video card, it might be a good idea to upgrade your CPU/mobo as well. A64 3000 Venices and NF4U mobos aren't too expensive. Depends on what you already have though.

Just something to consider . . .

You are upgrading based on a 3dMark score!? What about the games you actually play.

A 9800p usually gets around 2500 in 3dmk05, and my oc'd 9800p (xt) gets 3000-ish. Something else in your system is holding you back. Anyway, unless you have a fast A64 cpu, a x850 xt pe will be bottlenecked by your cpu. But it is the fastest agp card, if you really want one.

even though the cards are only in the 450 dollar range

Your 9800pro is bottlenecked by something, the one in my computer with a 1.8 P4 768mb ram i score 2200 in 05

Whatever, that boss at the end of 3DMark 03 was hard as hell. I still can't get past the hollowed out tree trunk with the lit up eyes and stuff in 05... Are you supposed to use bullet time or something? I just don't get it... That aside, the replay value of the level with the rocket powered airship thingy and the underwater dragon monster whatchamacallit is amazing... I could play that for hours. 🙂

Seriously though, if think everyone else has already hit the nail on the head. The OP's rig appears to be cpu limited. If that's the case, it might not be a bad time to cross over into the PCI-E rhealm with a decent 939 mobo and maybe an X800XL, depending on the depth of the pockets involved.

The CPU is Northwood, btw. First-gen Hyper-threading.

BTW, reran 3DM 05. Score jumped to 2300. But I still get single-digit frame rates.

But I still get single-digit frame rates.

Unless you have a Geforce 6, 7 or a Radeon X series your framerate will be like that it is supposed to.

RIght now you have run and rerun 3dMark 05. Why dont you run a game that YOU like and tell us the results. Once again i ask, does 3dMark really mean anything.

Well all right. Half Life 2 usually runs well. But recently, the game performance has gone to crap. It would get so slow and choppy I couldn't do anything, and that includes trying to save out. But nothing was running in the background, it just dies. Doom 3 wasn't fun to play. It would get very jerky and stutter like nuts during fight scenes.

It's not fun having only one resolution to play, but that's life with LCD monitors.

Spyware? If it just recently started getting choppy, I doubt you GPU suddenly got slower. Something else (most likely software) is holding you back... Have you tried OCing the card at all?

No I haven't. I figured these things are fast enough on their own. 🙂

It wouldn't be a video problem with the HL2 degradation. Audio skips/loops and it takes forever to get a response out of the menus. So there's more to it than that.

I usually set agp texture size the same as the video on your card. So if you have 128mb vram, go to your bios and set agp aperture to 128mb too. It might not make much difference, but usually thats how people set agp aperture size.

just format your computer and you should notice a boost in your performance. spyware/viruses and other malicious software greatly decrease computer performance.

Are any of the new gen cards (R520, 7800s) coming out on AGP? If not, does that make the ati x850 xt pe agp the "fastest AGP card ever"...?

If true, then if I upgrade from a 9800Pro to a X800XL or 6800GT (AGP), I've pretty much got zero upgrade path in the future.

ATI is supposed to release their R520 in both AGP and PCI-E, but I'm thinking that this will be the end of AGP.

AGP until hell freezes over!!! /JK

Anyway I just ordered an AIW x800xt (agp) - I figure by the time this card needs upgrading, agp will REALLY be gone, so then I'll jump on whatever's newer.

Sorry to hear of your troubles, Traxan. You should be able to get a good amount of performance out of your set up, but when it comes to newer games especially D3, aren't going to run well. My advice would be to pick up a 6800GT off of the FS/FT forums. That should run you about ~$250, and you should be able to get around $100 for your 9800P. Or, there are some x850xt's going for around $300, which would be really fast and about the limit that I would spend on an AGP video card at this point.

Your 3.0c will be a bottleneck with these newer cards to some degree, but a 3.0C should get you by just fine @ 1280*1024 for at least another year or two 🙂

X850XT w/silencer

6800GT w/Zalman

Good luck, and let us know what you decide. For what it is worth, it sounds like a nice reformat and clean installations of all the latest drivers would do wonders, I would try that first.

I thought the differnce from the XP3200 to whatever 3200 was a veary small proformace diffrence ?
