the fastest non-extreme edition cpu for socket 478 is the 3.4ghz northwood. prescott's only 2nd to it. socket 478 will die out probably by the end of the year unless intel plans on keeping the socket for it's budget line cpu's.
The fastest Prescott on 478 is the 3.4 GHz. Intel hasn't said anything official (as far as I know) but that proabably is the end of the line for 478 perfomance with Prescott. One of the reason's that Intel went to the 775 was to allow for higher speed FSB, 1066 MHz and beyond. The 478 won't go there.
I wanted to keep this 478 mobo going awhile before making the move, so it sounds like I should buy sometime near the end of this year. I have seen CPU prices go up on the "end of the a line" model probably because they are not as common as the slower speeds. (And people like me.) 🙂
I have seen both 'extreme edition' and Prescott CPUs and the only thing left to decide is what is better. A slower Prescott or the extreme edition non-Prescott? (Maybe the extreme edition is a Prescott.)
