Faster RAID 1 performance: onboard or external card?

I have an ABIT IS7-G with onboard RAID 1 and 0. I'm wondering if I'll get better performance from an external RAID card. I'll be using two 300 gigabyte Segate SATA drives in a RAID 1 configuration.
 
Onboard RAID will be SLIGHTLY faster. The only way external would be faster is if it is running off of PCI-X or PCI-E (Dont know of any PCI-E COntrollers to date).
