Faster modem download rate

Does anyone know of any programs that will tweak my modem and make the d/l rate go faster? i've been to www.tweak3d.net and tweaked it there, but i wanted a program that will speed it up. thanks.

well, if you think about it, you can only go as fast as the modems capabilties and the phone line's capabilities. a prog probably wouldn't tweak it too much. only very slightly

yea, i thought about that. i only connect at 28.8 on a 56k modem. how can i connect faster? should i call the phone company and yell at them to improve the lines?

A different driver might do something for you. I used to get around 30 but am now at about 50.6 after a driver change. Mine's a WinModem with an LT chip and I got the driver here.

I reckon Download Accelerator Plus doesn't improve your modem's performance but does allow your system to work smarter. If you've never tried that I'm sure that's over at tweakfiles.

Download Accelerator Plus is an excellent add on... It works very well and takes a lot of the furstration out of downloading files... (much more consistant downloads... speedwise)

Try looking for a firmware upgrade for your modem. My sister's laptop modem was only connecting at 28.8 until I found a flash upgrade at Xircom. It connects at around 44000 bps now.

Plastic Jesus: Thanks for the link to modem drivers. I have a WinModem with an LT chip also. I downloaded the driver upgrade and now connect much faster. THANKS! i had an expensive actiontec callwaiting modem...pci.. only connected at 36k... switched to a smartlink isa.. now i get 48k all the time

if you can only connect at 28.8 under a 56k modem, maybe it's the ISP. have you tried changing the access numbers? if yeah, maybe you should change isp

btw, have you looked under the properties of the modem to see what the max connect speed is? (the default should be the max, but maybe you changed it by accident)

No, the max connect speed is set at 115200. I've tried different ISP's and different access numbers, but the highest I can get it is 31200. Could it be my phone lines, because when I connect I can hear my modem dialing on the second line when the first phone line is silent (we have 2 lines).

yeah, could be the phone line. even though it would seem rather strange

how about this: go get a modem from a store, try it out, and see if it's your line. then take the modem back. lol

I doubt you will find that any of the 'tweaks' will improve your speeds much. If you want faster d/l's I'd recommend Download Accelerator Plus though. The only one that seems to consistently help out IMHO.

Well I tried another modem, but I got the same connect speed, 28.8. I'm thinking it must be the phone lines because I live in the suburbs of Dayton, Ohio and I'm about 3 miles to the nearest anything (no, I'm not a hick). That's the only thing I can think of. Thanks to everyone anyway.
