Faster Memory Cards for Digital Camera

Hi Guys,

I'm planning to buy SD Memory Card, preferably a 4gb one for digital camera use.
I want to know, buying a faster memory card like the 150X help much compared to normal 60X available.I know it seems 150x would be more twice as fast, but i wanna know if there any use for such speed in digital camera.....or it just helps in transfering the pics faster to the computer ?
I'm asking this question as 150x ones aren't available locally(or are just too expensive) in my country, so i would have to import, so I wanted if its worth the effort.......I can tollerate slow card to PC transfer rates...

What size megapixel pics will you be snapping?

5 mostly, but sometimes 7

Slower memory cards at those resolutions will hinder your ability to take quick successive snaps. You could find yourself waiting for the camera to save a previous image and miss that moment. I suppose it depends on the price difference as well.

i think if you have something like a canon 30d that can shoot at 5fps... you can benefit from a much faster card. Not sure how it would be really necessary on a p&s camera. the 60X would be good enough.

i don't have the camera yet....I would be buying the Canon Powershot a710 with it..it does continuous shooting @ 1.7fps..

What's the approx. time for saving the image at full 7.1 MP in 60X card, is it considerably large ?

I went from some 50x card to a 120x or something on my 4MP camera and I noticed the difference. Less lag between shots. It was immediately apparent to me. I don't even use the camera that much, and I noticed it, so it must be a significant amount of time - and that's with 4MP.

Didn't notice any change in transfer to PC though.

Sorta depends on how much more it costs though. They were close in price when I bought it - just had to spend another $10 or something.

It really depends on the camera's sequencing speed, ie., continuous shots per second. If it has good speed, then you will definitely appreciate the faster media. I especially like it with my Canon 5D, which can sequence at five shots per second. And, my 20D will do 9 per second. This very useful for sports and things where the precise best moment is not always apparent

My current choice is SanDisk Extreme III media.

Many cameras cannot take advantage of the speed. They are limited by their compression speed. It depends on what model camera you have. You will need a specific review of your camera.

Well as I said, I'm looking forward to buy the Canon Powershot a710 IS ..don't think continous shooting would be an issue....but do u guys think it would take advantage of the high speed memory card, can't find anything on net regarding it..
