Faster internet?

I live in a very small town (but with a very cool name- Mannsville (When I talk to guys that have controlling wives, I tell them they need to move to MANnsville 😉) Anyway, I am stuck with the local phone company's (Frontier) DSL service, which is getting to be slow compared to speeds I see when I go to other places. Anyway, I called Time Warner to get cable service, and they said it would cost $19,000 to construct a node or something so that their service could reach my house. I called Verizon, and they said that they don't service my area because Frontier does already, but Time Warner is supposed to service my area for cable internet.

So, is there anything I can do about this? I'm getting hosed by Frontier- $110 a month for phone + DSL (no TV)

look for a wireless ISP. may not be much faster, but rates may be better (the install/equipment can be costly up front sometimes).

theres also satellite...which is a hefty install fee, and a contract, and a lousy service rate for lousy bandwidth.

sucks, but its not uncommon to get the shaft for this type of service in such a small town, as far as i can tell. you should be grateful you can get DSL to start with, to be honest 😛

Yeah, I used to have to deal with dial-up internet at my Mom's house, but then Time Warner moved in and hooked her up with cable internet. And she lives in an even smaller town than I do!

ChAoTiC, would 3G really be faster than my DSL connection?

Yea. It sucks living in small rural areas. There isn't much choice. Satellite is horrible, and if there is 3G then it is equally bad.

Have you tried asking for the prices on dry loop dsl? (if you don't want the phone line)
I got rid of my phone and is on dry loop.

Depends on how fast your DSL connections it. 3G depending onw here you are can get around 1.5Mbps.

I wish AT&T would get off their dead butts and get me at least vanilla DSL. Sadly no wireless can reach me yet, cable is not an option in a rural area, satellite sucks, so my lone hope is Obama fast tracking wimax.

But ouch, frontier phone +vanilla dsl at $110/mo, what a rip off.

I believe you are already using your best available option. The slowest DSL I've heard of in the states is 384kbps/128kbps. You might be able to get faster bandwidth if there is a wireless provider kicking around, but your other options are horrible.

Those satalite internet setups require a contract, they start at $50/mo, get horrible, HORRIBLE latency and have a monthly bandwidth cap that is so low a 24/7 dialup connection could fill it.

I suppose to get DSL this summer, if fairpoint doesn't go bankrupt first. 😛 So I feel your pain.

Honestly, comcast was really expensive when I had it so I'm not to hot on cable anyway.

I live in New York City. My Internet is very fast and Not terribly expensive.

On the other hand the Air quality s*x, there is very little Green, everybody is in a Hurry, Parking the Car cost $450 a month, Crime is an issue.

You think you can do something about all of this mess (may be Obama can 😉 )?
