Faster Dual core or slower Quad core for micro PC build

I'm currently considering an E8400, E8500, Q6600, or low-range Yorkfield Quad (if I find the extra cash) for a micro PC build possibly in August. I don't plan on OCing because I'm concerned about thermal management in the little case so I'd like to run everything stock with possible aftermarket cooling such as Arctic Freezer (if it will fit). I'll probably pair it with an HD 4870 but no clue on the mobo. Question is, which one would be a better choice? I'm betting most of you will say the Dual core, but I just want to make sure. I plan on using this PC for school, basic multimedia, and gaming. Thanks for your advice and specific recommendations would be appreciated. i.e. Is the E8500 really worth the $$$ over the E8400? Thanks.

Depending on the amounts of time spent on school, multimedia & gaming, if gaming is top priority, go with a dualie.

I agree. And don't be afraid to overclock it a little bit. The E8400 would still OC nicely with the stock HSF. Just watch the temps.

A Quad will not only be hotter but it will draw more power from your smaller PSU. It's perfectly feasible though. If you feel you need a quad in the future you will probably be able to drop a fast one in cheap next year.

I think those AMD graphics cards are supposed to get pretty hot. The 4870 is dual slot, power hungry, and might be tough on a small system. A9600GT won't be as powerful but it would get the job done and be more at home in a SFF case.

I have to agree on this one if case temps is a issue. You might want to either consider a 9600GT or a Radeon 3870 instead. Yes, you will lose some performance, but you will be able to keep the case a lot cooler.

heh...

get the best of both words.

Faster quad. :p

But in seriousness, if heat is an issue, get the dual.
