Faster data transfer using AIM than Windows File Sharing?

I have a 2 computer LAN. Unfortunately, it's only 10mbit. I'm getting about 650K/sec transferring a 800+mb file. Via AIM send file, I'm getting 720K/sec or better, and it transfers in about 13 minutes, and not 20. Both computers use XP. I guess what's wierd is that the data has to travel the same path to get there, why is is faster via AIM? Does having QoS checked have anything to do with this? I had read somewhere about QoS taking some bandwidth just for it's own packets, or am I talking out of my ass? 🙂

If I got some 100mb cable, could I just do a cross-over cable between our 10/100 cards and eliminate the SMC EZHub I have? That would cause problems later when my brother came home and brought his comp, and not have anywhere to plug it into..

well if u upped it to a 10/100 network u would need to get a switch for the machines to log on to the internet... but aim does transfer faster over a 10mbit but not faster than a 100mbit... hope that helps u slightly
