Faster CPU than a T9xxx (~2.5GHz 6MB)

I got a fairly nice Asus laptop for a friend, 15" with the T93/94 (dont recall exactly) and a mobile 9600. They use it for 3D modeling/graphics, school work, and MMOs. Because it was a rush order we paid 1400$ (shipped/tax) for it.

While theyre mostly happy with it, they are finding it to be a bit slow for gaming and they would also like to get a 64bit OS (Im thinking Win7 of some kind). They can resell the laptop for about a thousand dollars...is there a chance of getting anything faster for about that? I think the CPU speed is probably fine, but I dont think reduced speed would be good. As for GPUs, most everything seems to be GT2xx now an I dont know how they relate to the 9 series. I know they just keep changing the name, so I want to get something faster than the 9600. Maybe the 9800 or equivalent.

Sucks, when I found that dell 9800 SLI deal for a grand I told em they should go for it...oh well.

Yeah that combination seems hard to find...It seems to all be low end CPUs with the faster GPUs or power hungry slow quad cores.

How would a 2.5GHz 6MB CPU compare to say a 2.66GHz 3MB CPU (or 2.8GHz)? Im finding allot of 8 series CPUs. Why no 9's, you think the old T93 woul be cheap by now. Are there 32nm mobile CPUs yet? I thought I heard end of 09, could be wrong.

How do ATI GPUs compare? Is there a list of the mobile parts and how they generally perform? Like a 4670, no idea how that competes with a 9600 and a gt250 or gts/gtx. Which ones use 65nm 55nm or even 40nm (are there any yet? cooler would definately be nicer)

Like 8800GTX=9800GT=GT2xx=ATI 4xxx
And I see stuff like GT260 GTS260 GTX260...WTF? I thought they were just rebaging everything...whats with all the crap now its getting crazy.

There dont seem to be many 15" laptops with fast GPUs, and even fewer with a fast CPU too. And they all seem to cost more than what I spent actually...forget about trying to find extras like DDR3 and good cooling (some laptop reviews have reported underclocked chips so your not getting what you pay for).

Is there not a good reliable safe website that just sells laptops? Every site seems to have like 1 or 2 an its different from all the others so shopping and comparing an trying to find a good deal seems really hard.

Here is a website comparing all the different mobile GPU's. Look at center right with list in red of Class 1, 2...GPU's. I believe they are in order of performance. (not sure if you have the 9600M GT or GS, they are different, and yeah, all these freaking models are confusing as hell)

T9xxx is pretty good as far as CPU performance. If you wanna improve gaming, you have to go for more powerful GPU, look for those GPU in class 1. Most "gaming" laptop are going to be in 17" range. 15" is usually popular with business people/student who are less concerned with gaming.

I, myself, have been looking into the 14"-15" gaming notebooks of late. What I have been hearing and reading about is that if you want a decent or better gaming lappy you need to look for one that has at least the 260m video card. Its about on par with the 9800GT. Most people are telling me to look for a P8xxx processor or better. Obviously the more powerful the cpu the better. I been looking at ones with a P9700 or the Q9000 quad. My research so far is saying going with a P over a T model proc. The Q9000 is about the same as the P9700 in performance but has four cores as opposed to two that the P9700 has. Both have 6Mb cache. The P9700 is 2.8GHz clock and the Q9000 has 2.0GHz clock. At this point I'm still thinking dual cores are better than quads as far as gaming goes but people are saying go quad for longevity. So anyway you can get a 14"-15" notebook with a P9700/Q9000, 260m GPU, 4Gb-6Gb RAM, 320GB HD, Vista O/S w/Win7 upgrade for $1500-$1600. The ASUS G51 and the Sager 8662 models are two of my top considerations so far.

Just thought I'd post what I have been looking into. Maybe it'll help you with making a decision or just give a comparison for comparison sake. Food for thought maybe.

Yep. I'd splurge for the P9700 cpu upgrade though but thats just me. I'd also go for a 500Gb 7200rpm HD which brings it up to the $1600 range. Again, thats just me.
