Is this your motherboard? Can you check on which one you have?, All the ones that uses the KT266 chipset should support Athlon XP, I'm guess it's up to 2000+ if you use the latest bios for all these boards.
What he has is the older MSI board based on the VIA KT133 chipset (not the "A"), which is limited to 100mhz (or 200mhz FSB). Latest BIOS updates will make it run Athlon XP chips but only at 200FSB. And the max. multiplier it has is, I think, 14 so a 1.4ghz CPU at 200fsb (14 x 100) should be fine.
