Fast System, Fast upload, Slow download...

My freshly built system runs fast.
It uploads fast. It loads web-pages and downloads fast about 20% of the time.
The other 80% of the time, it loads web-pages and downloads slow as a dog.
Speakeasy clocks it at .28Mbps download when its bogging.
Its been really hard to pin point a cause, or establish a pattern of when its slow.
(IMPORTANT NOTE: My 7 yr old P4 system runs consistently fast on the same wireless connection. The router and both PCs are in the same room.)

Running Windows 7, Heres my process list...

Please HELP me make my internet consistently fast again!!!

How do you connect? Direct? Network? Wireless? Wired?

I have a Netgear wireless router and ASUS PCE-N13 dual antenna wireless card PCI-E.

who is your ISP? Many cable providers are suffering from "node over-utilization" issues during afternoon/evening hours, which translates to slow internet for everybody.

I have Cox cable internet.

But, here's the thing...
If it were the ISP, then both systems would be lagging at the same time.
But my old system is fast 100% of the time.

My old Pentium-4 system will consistently be about 3-5 Mbps, and my new I7 system will be at .27 Mbps. And thats any time of day!

I'm totally stumped...

Do you have another wireless card you could install to check the problem isnt hardware based?

Have you used copper to connect to the router and test download speed when connected that way?

What does taskmgr do during a slow download? Any particular process jump to the top?

Thanks for the tip rudder! Well, I hooked up a network cable to the PC and router and it was blazing fast! Such a simple test to narrow the culprit, I overlooked it!

So, does that mean the wireless card is not compatible, is defective, or just needs to be configured properly?

I tried the windows assigned driver, and the latest driver from support.asus.com, both with the same result...
