fast mobile hdd?

right now, I am running on this 40gb 4200rpm hdd. I really want a upgrade for my lappy. if I am going to upgrade my hdd, I can keep it next time when I decide to upgrade my laptop.

what are some fast hdd out there? I want to get the Hitachi 40GB or 60GB 7200rpm hdd /w 8mb buffer. I heard Hitachi is bad, are there any better choice?

If you want a 2.5" 7200 rpm HDD, there is no other choice right now. I think Hitachi's bad reputation stems from their/IBM's desktop drives (namely the old PATA Deskstar series), which were notorious for defects.

i am using the 60gb 7200rpm 7k60 in my emachine laptop.....it provided a noticeable increase in response time. so go for it.

I have used this 40gb hitachi abusily for about 1 years. there is no problem

how muct better is 7200rpm to a 5400rpm? I think it is 1/3 faster.

I have the 2.5 40gig 7200rpm HD from hitachi. I had it for about a few months now. I treat my laptop like books, like tossing in my backpack with no protection, shaking and moving around while the laptop is on, etc. No problems.

much faster than my old 60 gig 4200 hitachi.

you can get the 40gig 7200rpm w/8meg buffer for 100 bucks, the 60gig version for 150 bucks.

IBM/Hitachi being "bad" is almost an urban legend. The Travelstar laptop HDDs arer top notch - I have two 60 GB/7200 RPM for my current laptop - and have had at least 6 Travelstars before that - all excellent - never a problem.

I have the 60GB 7200rpm 8mb buffer HGST Travelstar drive it replaced a 60GB 8meg buffer 4200rpm drive in my emachines M6805, it was like night and day it made my laptop so much faster it was amazing.

I follow suite with everyone else.

I had a 20 gig IBM travel star drive, upgraded to hitachi 7200rpm 60gig 8meg...

All I can say is NIGHT and day difference in performance.

Highly recommend the hitatchi, acording to mobmeter, the drive temps are about the same as well! As for battery life, I rock 2 66whr 4460mAh batteries, so battery life has stayed about the same.

I would also say, if you can wait, wait for the 100gig 7200rpm seagate momentus, that would be the fastest drive on the market, if it would only make it to market.
