Fast Linux Distro

ThinkPad 570e

Running something fast and light on my g/f laptop. I'm thinking Xubuntu or Puppy Linux. Any better suggestions?

Don't use a big Desktop Environment. Stick to something smaller, like IceWM.

I ran Ubuntu on a 667 Mhz / 192 MB desktop computer just fine. You could try it yourself, but Xubuntu would definantly run better. Can't think of a better choice than Xubuntu.

I just installed- and now am on Xubuntu. Seems like it should be just fine.

Xubuntu seems to be the most popular for fast-and-easy-to-use, but (from what I hear) the tops for speed is Damn Small Linux (but may be a little more difficult to use).

Speed is relative.

Just because sxomething like DSL is designed to run on low resource computers doesn't mean it will run the apps or proccess the data the fastest. (although generally this is true)

I'd go with Debian or Slackware and run a minimalist window manager. Also Xubuntu is worth trying. Use DSL for very old computers, but I know for a fact it will fly on a system op speced, so it's worth looking at also.

DSL runs smooth as butter on the old PIII 64MB of RAM lappy I installed it in. It takes just seconds for it to boot up.

Said PCLOS runs fine on a PIII 600 or so, but has a touch more stuff loaded and eye candy on that I might want for a slower machine. It might be nice if that's turned off, but I don't know for sure.

You should also look into Zenwalk (Slackware-based). Zenwalk + KDE (for apps, mainly ) aught to do quite well.

Basically, 192MB gives some room to work in, but using a 366, it wouldn't hurt to go a bit more minimal than Ubuntu.
