Fast internet is kind of a waste of time...

My cable was upgraded to 25/2.5 (Shaw Extreme) a couple days ago and I was really pumped. Now I find the vast majority of sites I visit can't spit out anywhere close to those download speeds. Even my newsgroups can only do about 1.6MB/s down (Blocknews).

Are you finding this with reasonably quick internet? I remember posting about this back in 2006 when I first got 10mbps internet. The future is no improvement!

I think that household internet service over 10mbps is a waste unless you're downloading from several multiple sources at the same time.
BTW what're the advantages of subscribing to a newsgroup compared to just using the bay of pirates?

Usenet>p2p.

Servers are online with retention>1000 days, speed and completeness too. p2p, you'll be lucky if the person/s sharing are even online and sharing that file you want. Plus using SSL, your ISP address is more secure than using p2p software like Vuze where it can be viewed by everybody.:sneaky:

I routinely max my connection at 2.1MBps with typical downloads. I'm patching APB right now at 2.1MBps and when I reinstalled a game on steam earlier it came in at 2.1MBps too.

I'm 30ish/5 Mbit at home, cable, on a pretty underutilized main. Newgroups using 50 connections while having a router that can handle the load I pull >3MBs. Steam likewise. Websites are hit or miss. Some sites I can get good throughput. Others, meh the connection is overkill.

I thought about downgrading since I don't really NEED that fast of a speed, but our cable provider has a monopoly (just like our phone/DSL provider). I'd have to drop to 10% of my current speed in order to save more than a few bucks, given how expensive the basic tier is.

By contrast, the FIOS they're rolling out in some areas is 50Mbit for $30 or something like that. Too bad it doesn't run where I live. The only people I know that have FIOS in this area (except one) are people who would otherwise be content with dialup.

Are you using wireless? I find that 802.11g limits you to about 2MB/s anyway...

Its nice for some sites, or if you are a master browser and do multiple things at once.
Its REALLY nice when you have multiple computers in the house.
On 15mbit two people can watch HD netflix each with their own account.

You're right it's a big waste of time!

I cannot do anything while so busy downloading the shit out of everything, maxing out speed tests, etc. It's the zeroes and ones equivalent of crack cocaine! :D

I have FIOS 25/25 (really more like 30/16 in real-world terms), and I find that this is true as well. I don't ever max out my connection downloading from sites. I do find that Windows Updates go faster than they used to, I used to have 3Mbit/768Kbit DSL.

I get around 300KB/sec downloading through my VPN, and around 280KB/sec uploading, that's accessing the FIOS connection via a 16/2 Mbit/sec comcast connection.

I can get 1.6MB/sec downloading from my NAS on my FIOS, not going through the VPN.

With that ping time and DL rate, Im guessing youre on a corp network connected minimum OC48 directly with either ATT or Verizon.

I regularly download at 5.5MBps that's 50Mbps... So no, fast internet is not a waste of time.

I upgraded to Shaw Extreme a few weeks back, and it seems to be snappier when I open multiple web page at the same time.

And DL 800+ MB beta Ubuntu iso seems to be quicker than DL iso in the past.

OP, are you considering that on a 25 megabit connection your max DL speed will be 3.125mb/s MAX?

A decent newsgroup provider will easily max a 50mbps pipe. If you have a spouse or a few kids in the house watching netflix, then you'll be starving for more bandwidth.
