"The combination of fat with sugar or fat with salt seems to have a very particular neurochemical effect on the brain," Ann Kelley, a professor at the University of Wisconsin (search) who co-authored the unpublished study, said on the Fox News Channel. "What that does is release certain chemicals that are similar to drugs, like heroin and morphine."

BULLSHIT!!

Has anyone EVER eaten any Fast food that?s actually tastes good? Yes, you damn liar. I mean places like MickyD's only has at best, okay food. Nothing of quality. The only times I have ever had any 'good' food at MickyD's is when I'm starving and I just wolf down two cheeseburgers so quick, I can't even taste what I just ate.

I don't buy this argument that fast food is addictive, in the classic sense. Compared to cigarettes, you don?t get addicted to any substance in Fast Food (like nicotine in cigs).

This lawyers in this country are getting it into peoples minds that you never at fault for anything you do, is someone else?s fault and you don't have to be personally responsible for anything.

And that's my $0.03

EDIT: If you really want to know what tricks the Fast Food industry is up too, read the Awesome book 'Fast Food Nation.' Good parts about what the industry really puts in what you eat to keep you coming back for more. Like with MickyD's French fries, they actually put in Tallow into their cooking oil to make the fries taste like beef. Man them scientists are genisuses.

They may be obvious but you have to remember that our society relies largely on empirical data and research for progress and reference.

Even if it's "obvious" the fact that it's scientifically proven (or suggested) lays the groundwork for anything that may rely on that data in the future. For example, another study could use that data to develop a drug to inhibit said neurochemical behavior as use for a diet aid, or, in a more pessimisstic view, a lawsuit could be instigated on the grounds that McD's was not only vague about the deleterious health effects of its food but also failed to warn that it could be habit forming. The latter point is exceedingly unlikely but is just used for an example of how these seemingly "obvious and pointless" studies can have a practical use in the big picture.

And the winner of the speaking out of one's ass award goes to....thatsright!
First, "tastes good" is a purely subjective experience. I think sushi, hot wings, and chocolate taste good. I know people who hate fish, think chicken tastes like ass, and wouldn't eat chocolate with someone else's mouth.

Also, "quality" and "taste" are two completely different things. You can have high quality food that tastes horrible. Conversely, you can have really bad quality food that tastes good. Fast food restaurants have cheap, low quality, low nutrition meals that appeal to a wide range of tastes. Obviously you are not one of those, and for you to dictate what everyone should think "tastes good" is horribly self-righteous.

Your second statement is just plain dumb. "Compared to cigarettes.." Again, they're not saying that you become both physically and mentally dependent on the stuff. The study shows that the ingredients in the food cause your brain to think, "Hey, this crap makes me feel good! I'll start preferring this to other, more nutritious choices!" No one's saying that you'll have strung out junk food junkies robbing banks to get their next McHigh. In the "classic sense" as you put it, this study shows that it DOES open the pathways that are ALSO opened up by classically addictive drugs, just not in the same amounts.

Because they're right. Personal responsibility is non-existent, believe me. If you do something, you think that you do it, but you're doing it b/c of other people, b/c you want to be like them. People are all in a bunch together, it's a matter who's the one you interact with is. If you interact with McDonald's, heck, you can't ignore the fact that they feed you junk food, and they're doing their best for you to fall in their trap. It's not just some BS, I tell you. Of course, you can ignore the fact that McD and other fast foods exist, but it would be so egotistic and hostile, don't you think? You have to peek inside at least once. Then again and again. Then you get hooked and get fat. Time for a lawsuit baby.

Yeah I know this might be getting off topic here, but.......

If I burn down an apartment building and kill 49 people, I would assume this is my fault. Thus I would take personal responsibility. Yet under my theory that Lawyers in this country are trying to eliminate the idea of personal responsibility, some lawyer would create some convoluted defense. He would probably say that 'I' did it due to the captivating graphics present only on the can of gas, and therefore the Gas Can company is responsible for my killing spree.

I just wanted to comment on how lawyers are turning this country to hell.
