Fast DVD Ripping with Sony DDU1621 16x Drive???

Got a Sony DDU1621 16X DVD (40X CD-ROM) OEM drive from Newegg.

It was picked up by Win2K without any problem. However, I can only rip dvds at about 5x with this drive and I heard people have gotten to 10x with it. I just want to know if there is anything I can do to improve the ripping speed.

My specs:

Drive is a slave on the second IDE connect. O/S is win2K with sp3. P4 2.4 @ 2.8. 512mb PC2100.
