A lot of this is common sense lol. Next time go spend some time with a tailor and make small talk. They know all these rules. That's how I know about the button.

Disagree 100% on button down collars. Button down = no tie. He also should have put that floppy collars = no, buy or find new collar stays.

No square toed shoes with suits either.

Good article. Like others have said, mostly common sense but good for everyone to know.

Agreed with above that button down collar=no tie, ever.

Also, socks should match the pants, not the shoes. Big miss by the article on that one. I match my socks to my shirt most often though :D

What about those tie clip things? I've always disliked how much ties will shift around, and have been tempted to pick one up, but I'm not sure if they're too tacky or not.

Double and triple plus plus on the brass button recommendation. Blazers are so out of style and just scream "I don't know how to dress."

One thing I'm wondering about is this thing I've seen recently with guys wearing elf shoes. What the hell is that? They're dress shoes, but incredibly long and the front is all curled up, presumably from walking around like an idiot with a shoe that 6 inches too long for their feet and not having any toes there to keep the shoe in shape. Every time I see a guy wearing those I want to bitch slap him.

I recommend tie clasps if you want to look like you're a time traveler from the 70s.

there are several people in this thread for whom "common sense" has a definition entirely different from mine.

it depends on the corporation and the industry not the group. at deutschebank and lehman brothers even IT people wore suits which is obviously nutty.

I've seen them two ways, either they are very high-end shoes or they are junk. Same with square toes. You can usually make out which is which by looking at the rest of the outfit.

Elf shoes + no vent in the suit = cheap. Elf shoes + side or center vent = more expensive.

Personally, I only really wear Allen Edmonds or Alden, captoe or wingtip.

Yeah, that's why I see them in gatherings of investment bankers who have nothing but BB or higher wear.

uh yeah.

I get jealous when I have dealings with the university here, as all their IT guys are wearing Tshirts, shorts in the summer, ETC.

I think they are some old ass medieval design. A few hundred years out of date. But I guess for someone wanting to look different...

Edit, found them. Called Poulaines. Apparently, only fancy upper class folks could wear long shoes. Was a sign of being hoity toity.

Wearing blazers because you're about to go out on the yacht with your investment banking buddies to shoot clay pigeons with inlaid ivory with your gold plated shotgun is acceptable.

Being a poser and wearing a brass buttoned blazer to your mailroom job, not so much.

"If you want to present your most professional self, you don’t want to be caught in rubber soled shoes. They look clunky — like shoes a teenager wears to church.

Shoes with leather soles are more expensive, but they are yet another subtle sign that can convey a higher level of professionalism. If shoes like this are still a bit too pricey for your budget, there are many brands of shoes that have some rubber and some leather on the bottom but have the same slim profile. The only time you’ll see the difference is when you take your shoes off."

Disagree, the Italians have switched to rubber on the high end shoes at this point. The last couple pairs of Ferragamo dress shoes I have bought were rubber soled that looked like leathers. Also Prada and Gucci have been doing rubber for a while now. Living in MN and working in Minneapolis and Chicago, rubber is a must.

WTF? When did it become standard that blue suits -> brown shoes? If you're darker blue (navy), it is conservative to have black shoes. Damn you young whippersnappers!
