Fascinating point about the movie Cabin in the Woods I never realized.

So I watched a reaction/review to this recently and a comment sort of blew my mind. Made me realize the writing while already clever was actually even more clever than I realized.

The shadowy organization that setup the horror trope sacrifice to the old ones (basically the audience) completely blew who they chose for each trope.

They chose the following

  • The Whore - Jules (Anne Hutchison)
  • The Fool - Marty (Frank Kranz)
  • The Jock - Curt (Chris Hemsworth)
  • The Nerd - Holden (Jesse Williams)
  • The Virgin/Final Girl - Dana (Kristen Connolly)
They used tainted blond hair dye on Jules and various drugs to make each of them behave like their archetypes before being sacrificed. At the end when Sigourney Weaver tells Dana she’s the virgin and Dana’s look says really? Weaver says they work with what they have, but did they?

If you listen closely it doesn’t look like they did.

  • The Whore - Dana. It’s said at the beginning she was sleeping with her married professor
  • The Fool - Jules. She’s making jokes about reading and basically being silly at the start of the movie
  • The Jock - Holden catches the ball Curt threw out the window in mid- air in the middle of the street. He’s also ripped
  • The Nerd - Curt. Halfway through Marty says Curt was at school on a full academic scholarship
  • The Virgin/Last Girl - Marty. Jules says they were going together freshman year but they just kissed. (He also makes it to the end of the movie)
That can’t be a coincidence and is actually really subtle writing. Especially since it was written by Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard.

(One other fun bit of trivia. Marty the stoner’s actor was more jacked than even Chris Hemsworth at this point so they had to put him in baggy clothes).

iirc they got their advisement on at least some of the archetypes from the gas station guy, which as far as I remember basically worshipped the old ones. He was more likely to assist in breaking the system than supporting it.
