fark...video card just died :(

I've had a loud vibrating noise coming from my case for the last week, so I backed up all my data assuming that it was a HD crashing. Low and behold, it was the fan on my ATI AIW video card. ATI no longer supports the 8500 AIW series cards, so I'm out of a video card now 🙁

*Not to mention the fact that this card has no serial number/part number sticker on it, so they were hesitant to even talk with me on the phone. This sucks.

i bought it used from the FS/T forums here from another member. The card was mfg'd sometime in 2002. ATI won't support this card 1) without a serial number sticker and 2) b/c it's out of warranty. I certainly didn't get much use out of this card. I wonder if the fan is the problem and how easy it is to replace?

? change the fan.

i had an old radeon that died. i unplugged the fan and just ziptied a 60mm case fan i had lying around to it😛 tossed it into an old pc with fanspeed controller. those old vid cards weren't all that hot to begin with, not much cooling required.

Yeah, it's probably just a 40mm or 50mm fan, at most. If your pci slot below the video card is empty, getting one of those pci slot cooler fans, like this might be enough cooling to keep it going. 🙂

It's a 45mm fan. I'm going to try and isolate the problem on the card before I start making any rash decisions.

I plugged the card back in without the fan, and it worked, but I figured that's probably why it stopped working in the first place - from overheating. I went to Best Buy, CompUSA, and Computer Builders Warehouse and although I didn't find a direct replacement, I found a fan (at CompUSA) that had a heatsink and fan combo that was the perfect fit for $12. The card is working great now. Thanks guys, I was afraid I'd have to buy a new card.
