Good deal if it works, that's much better than the $170(?) Sony wants for 60GB model repairs.

When my 60GB dies I'd be tempted to pay the $150 to get a Slim instead, since my PS2 still works and looks about the same with a component cable as the PS3 upscaling to HDMI.

Yeah, I called them. $150 for a Slim, $170 for a fix, and my data isn't saved either way. Plus they only give a three year warranty.

This guy says he'll try to keep the data intact, and if it asks to reformat, send it back so I can get it off myself. He says the disk will stay in there, and he offers a 6 month warranty. I have a 320gb drive BTW.

Yeah, mine bit the dust back in December. I got it fixed though. I think it's worth sending it into Sony. Even though you loose your data, at least you're guaranteed to get it fixed or replaced. These ebay/craigslist guys are sketchy at best.

Sony will refuse the fix the system if the seal has been broken by someone other than them, in warranty or not.

Yeah but two of these repairs would equal one of Sony's, so IDC to be honest.

Hmmm well this is just a guess but since RROD for the 360 stands for Red Ring Of Death I'm guessing YLOD for the PS3 stands for Yellow Light Of Death.

How do you jump from RED RING to YELLOW LIGHT? Those of us w/out PS3s don't know there's a yellow light on the console that signals error. Cut him a fucking break, it could have been anything.

I think you're reading too much into his post. I sense no hostility; rather, it just seems like he was thinking out loud.

Yeah, it's the same error largely caused by the same problem. Weak solder breaking electrical contact due to overheating. I wish they went back to lead instead of tin. Anyway, from what I recall, the PS3's thermal paste dries which is what causes the CPU to overheat.

I just think you're setting yourself up with problems if you go with these guys though. You honestly don't know if they're reputable. The 60gb is worth fixing I think since they hold onto their value really well. $170 is not a big expense since you know it will get fixed, or they'll send you a new identical unit. The other option is to buy a Slim but you sacrifice all the features the 60gb has

You should be able to just pull the drive from the dead PS3 and drop it into the new PS3 without any problems.

I'm going with the guys. Sony is going to erase my data, and honestly, I don't want that and have to back up my saves that cannot be moved.

Nope, it tries to format it.

If it's cheaper to get a Slim than to have it repaired (if that's what you were saying) I'd get the newer hardware unless you have no other way of playing PS2 games.

I really need my four USB ports, which I use at least three at a a time, I want my PS2 compatibility even though I only have 6 games or so for PS2, I want my card slots even though I barely use them, and I like the form factor of the fat PS3 more than the Slim.

Besides, if it does work, I can be the guinea pig and reviewer of the service for the sites I visit.

Probably because the 360 has failed left and right and PS3 owners* have sat by smugly and said things like 'What a shame your console is dead, I think i will go play some God of War now!'

Well, it did take 3 years for the PS3's to start showing this issue, compared to the 6-9 months for the Xbox360....

That said, the biggest enemy seems to actually be dust to the PS3 owners. Clogged air intakes seem to be the main reason for the overheating that causes any weak solder joint to go. Keeping it clean may go a long way to keeping it from happening to you. Since the warrenty is probably up for anyone who has an early 60GB version, you might as well open it up to do a real cleaning (not just putting a vacuum to the exhaust vents like the manual says). The fan intakes are on the front/bottom and are accessible once opening the case. You can then use compressed air to blow from the inside out to the front to clear the intakes (use the extender that comes with most compressed air cans). Do not blow the air into the system from the outside since you are just likely to jam the dust into things like the fan bearing housing. I have cleaned my system twice since I have gotten it, and each time the fan has noticeably gotten softer from not needing to spin as hard to remove the heat in the system.

I would MUCH rather have my console fail in the first few months of me having it than have it fail 3 years after having it. If it fails in a couple of months, you get a brand new console, free. If it fails in a few years, you're shit out of luck.

That being said, I went through four 360's before I got my PS3. My first 360 failed the third of fourth day after I got it. My second one failed after about a year.. At the time, they hadn't announced that they were going to cover the RROD for 3 years instead of just 90 days or whatever their warranty is. I sat on it for about a month before they upped the warranty to 3 years. My third 360 took about 6 months or so to fail. My fourth one was going strong for over a year until some doucher stole it. It was stolen at the same time that the PS3 slim came out, so I instantly bit on it. I'm much happier with my PS3.

That being said, at least M$ had the balls to admit that they were having troubles with the 360's and extended the warranty for the RROD to 3 years. You don't see Sony doing that now, do you?
