Senator John McCain's family issues statement that he will discontinue treatments for his brain cancer. The Maverick can finally rest after fighting the good fight all his life.

So...how soon will McCain announce his resignation? If he doesn't resign (a final "Eff you" to Trump), how soon will Republicans try to oust him/replace him in order to confirm Kavanaugh before October?

Only Republican in Washington with integrity and he's dying. :( No doubt he will be replaced with an Trump loyalist ultra hack. :( Godspeed to him.

As much as I dislike McCain and his politics, I wouldn't wish brain cancer on anyone. Good thing Trump is immune to it...

I don't think we should romanticize McCain too much. In the Trump era, he's had a bad habit of staunchly objecting to at least some of Trump's policies... and then voting for them because that's what the party wants. There's also the matter of picking a clueless person like Sarah Palin for a VP candidate.

However, his integrity still sits so far above most of the current Republican party that scumbags like Cruz, Hatch and McConnell can't even see him from their place at the bottom. And I can't help but empathize with McCain. Cancer is scary to start with, let alone when you stop treatment and know that death may be months (hopefully not weeks) away. It's like untying your boat from the dock knowing that you'll sail into oblivion.

2000 McCain was pretty decent. 2018 McCain is pretty decent for a Republican, which isn’t saying a whole lot. Regardless, I hope he and his family can enjoy the time he has left, and I hope he doesn’t have a lot of pain.

His integrity took a nosedive when he ran for president, but post-Trump he still demonstrated a higher level of it than most other members of the GOP.

On a serious note if that's possible, something needs to change when these types of circumstances arise. When your Senator is too ill to be present for voting and it's with a terminal illness, there should be a process that removes that individual from office. In this case, it's a Senator and the state has one Senator that can still vote. If it's a Representative, then that district is totally hosed. They have no representation whatsoever.

Whether the law covering this would be done at the state or federal level I do not know but IMO it needs to be done.

Really says something that he is willing to obstruct his own party until his dying breath. Must have been a closet liberal all along, right Boomerang?

Sure he gets a B- if we grade him vs Republicans but if we grade vs all Americans he's a solid F.

Let's be honest though, compared to the Trumpers, Teahadis and current GOP leadership, even Dubya's gang of neo-cons look like goddamn heroes.

Long way to go to say you wish he were dead.

McCain was smart enough to know that he did not appeal to the base. He had to find someone who did.

Your suppositions are an indicator of a mental state that is not healthy. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar.

I can't say I liked his politics but the man was a patriot unlike Cadet Bonespurs who is a weaseling traitor to the nation.

I wish him a painless ending and my thoughts are with his family and friends.
