Farcy doesn't like 6800gt memory OC

I just completed building my new gaming box. Its an Athlon 64 3400 and a eVGA 6800GT. In doom3 and Call of Duty, i have zero problems oc'ing the vid card to Ultra speeds 400/1100. But in Farcry 1.1, every few minutes the computer will pause for a few seconds and then keep going. I'm running 61.77 drivers. After playing around with the clocks, i've discovered that Farcry doesn't like the memory overclock. I can run fine at 400/1000, but move up to 400/1020 and the pauses return. 350/1020 had the same problems.

Anyone else experience this? I'm wondering if it might be a power problem. I bought an el cheapo case with built in "350 watt" PSU for $20 (it is hideously ugly and the opposite of tool-free).

The PSU is always a possibilty. I find it odd that it would skip in FarCry, but not Doom3.

With such nice equipment why are you risking it all with a powersupply that cost you probably 5 bucks? It CAN AND WILL ruin your equipment. I have seen it personally.

It did that to me also with a BFG 6800 gt; used a 380w Antec TruePower and tried it with a Thermaltake 420w. There have been alot of posts about the freeze in Far Cry when overclocking your gt. Most people just deal with the freeze as they don't want to loose that extra frame, or two, from overclocking. I didn't see it worth it myself.

Try turning fast writes off in bios, that may help.

I had a difficult time getting my memeory to 1100 too. Bought a new PSU but it didn't improve the situation. So I stick with 1000 on the memory. Wouldn't get too upset, most of the improvement for GT's is on the core overclock. Even then, though, we're oly talking about 1 frame extra. Not sure if its worth the slight chance of damaging the card.

Maybe the vram needs more volts, try flashing to an uiltra bios?

Speak for yourself sir 🙂 I am enjoying 431/1.1ghz on my BFG GT and I assure you it is more than a frame or 2 in most testing I've done, sometimes substantially more.

I agree a $30 case+POS..I mean PSU is just incomprehensible given the high-end components you have
😕 Some have the audacity to give us grief over how often we point out the PSU as a culprit here, but it's for damned good reason, because the PSU often is the culprit. That generic POS case+PSU probably provides terrible air flow *may be partially responsible for overclock instability=hot air in case?*, doesn't have enough fan mounts, and the 350w is probably like 12-15A +12v=lose that thing and buy a good case and quality PSU. For instance, Antec has cases+PSU that are very good quality and design.
