Farcry2 : what good is the hang glider ?

All I can do is just descend slowly and slowly and cover very little ground.
is there a way to get some lift?

It helps you get some diamond cases. Some are in places you can't normally get to. I didn't ever use it except for a couple cool getaways that either got me killed or left me stranded.

You don't need the diamonds either. I had hundreds by the time I finished the game and nothing to spend them on.
