Heh, most of those FC:p screenshots seem to be showing off VTF/displacement mapping, or at least parallax occlusion mapping. I wonder how achievable that'd be on PC (Xenos has up to 48 "pipes" and 16+16 "TMUs" available for VTF, whereas even the GTX has just 8 vertex pipes and vertex fetch units), or if it's just a case of Crytek including it b/c they know every X360 owner will be able to see it and use it (whereas on PC, if it's a VTF effect, only GF6&7 owners get it, and probably only owners of the faster cards).

I have to say there are quite a few games coming out very soon that look awesome.

Like Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter. It looks incredible and the fact they have made whole city blocks for you to fight in and around! It looks amazing!

Oblivion, well its already been said so no need for me to say anymore

Hitman Blood Money is looking very nice. Not the best graphics but definitly up there with the top.

Dark Messiah using the source engine looks very nice indeed, with all the upgrades Valve have done to their engine its going to keep looking up to date.

Company of Heroes. Well if no one has seen the pics of this game well go see them now. This is made by Relic, the Dawn of War and Homeworld makers, and damn the graphics are nearly on par with FPS graphics for a squad based RTS!

Splinter Cell 4 looks very good, and for the fact we have only seen the CURRENT GEN pics and movies. What do you think the next gen pics and movies will show us!

And last but not least Medieval 2: Total War. This has just been recently announced but by god this looks amazing again. If you havent read up on it, go do it now. Lots more stuff they rae putting in including lots more detail in everything in terms of gameplay and graphics!

The only reason I think this is true is because of the geography..... I mean c'mon, you're comparing a beautiful tropical paradise to post apocolyptic Russia... :p of course it's gonna look cooler!

Seriously, both games look incredible, but IMHO HL2 looks a bit more realistic.

S.T.K.A.L.K.E.R. looked bettern than HL2 in 2004 (although not released still:() and that was in a similar vein.....not so post apocalyptic but more so huge Russia. And agruably it looks better than Far Cry, maybee:S.......maybee not better but at least as cool.

I have an xbox 360, i completed Call Of Duty, I thought PGR3 was alright, i didn?t really like Perfect Dark Zero nor Condemned. Now I am bored and don?t use it often.

I look forward to some more titles, and this Far Cry looks immense.

Don't forget that PCs are able to run Far Cry at far higher resolutions and AA levels than the 360 can.

Hopefully more PC games come out looking like that.

There's a video on the internet comparing the two games, if you haven't seen it

So the waves are not 3D, it is just changes in the texture? How would this look at eye-level when swimming? FarCry's water was 3D when close up.

The waves have three dimensions. look at the video when Jack shoots the water at the end. he focuses on one point and then a wave comes that changes the place of the hit.

What is displacement mapped exactly? or parallax

Parallax is like Tampax.....and displacement is that funny feeling you get when you are not fitting in. something that most people in computer forums feel when they go out into the world. (just like me). But seriously, I am not certain.
All i know is that its good. Flat textures....bad!!!!

Game to really the push the ingame graphic bar to a new level :)

Are you joking? Oblivion is nowhere near cutting edge. Im not trying to down the games graphic engine but ive seen just about every screenshot up to date and none of them are jaw dropping. Actually a majority of them are butt ugly, and this is coming from a person who is exstatic for its release however i dont see anything above current games in the gfx department.

Have you seen the 64-bit extended content for Farcry?

Amazing draw distance, improved detail, and offset bump mapping FTW

and you can run it on a 32 bit cpu/os :D

QFT

Some the indoor delapidated rooms looked like photos to me.

Plus I have yet to see in game characters match HL2 let alone the fisherman in HL2 LC

here is a neat thing

"displacement mapping can be interpreted as a kind of vertex-texture mapping, where the values of the texture map do not alter the pixel color, but change the position of the vertex instead...

displacement mapping can in this way produce a genuine rough surface."

so:
bump < normal < parallax < displacement mapping
