Far Cry 4 worth it for co-op?

So I'm trying to decide whether to pick up FC4 for myself and my brother, as we are always looking for a good co-op game.

Here's the thing though: I was pretty thoroughly disappointed with the co-op features of FC3. Very linear, stand alone missions seemed completely contrary to the overall "open world sandbox" emphasis of the rest of the game.

So I guess my question is, how the does the co-op work? Is it basically just FC3's "stand alone missions for two", or does it allow you more open-world sandbox options to run around together and approach different situations as you want?

Thanks!

EDIT: Sorry for the new thread. I hadn't even noticed the main "FC4" thread on the page.
Mods, if you see fit, feel free to merge this into the other thread.

FC4 is the opposite of FC3. In FC4 all the coop is free roam. So you can do things like take outposts, climb watchtowers, etc in coop but you can't progress through the story in coop. So to like unlock the 2nd half of the map at least one of you has to progress through 2/3 of the story. It's pretty fun for a bit, there is a decent amount to do just messing around, but it still kinda is a "bonus" rather then the primary game mode. I haven't played any of the DLC, but I understand the Yeti one is coop, someone else would be able to confirm I'm sure.

Thanks for the reply!

That's really all I'm looking for. The "story" really doesn't matter to me. I just wanted to be able to attack outposts and plan attacks and approaches across the whole map, rather than be funneled into straight up firefights down narrow "outdoor corridors" ala FC3's linear co-op.

The host can progress through the story. The person joining the match doesn't get to keep objective progression, but still gets to keep money, weapons, etc. Best to alternate host privileges if playing with a buddy.
