What is SETI@home?

SETI@home is a scientific experiment that harnesses the power of hundreds of thousands of Internet-connected computers in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). You can participate by running a program that downloads and analyzes radio telescope data. There's a small but captivating possibility that your computer will detect the faint murmur of a civilization beyond Earth.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Four easy steps to join
Team AnandTech @ SETI

Step 1: ) Download the appropriate SETI@home client.

Windows 95/98/NT GUI SETI@home client

Macintosh SETI@home client

Text based clients
for UNIX, WinNT/98/95 (Win95 support added with 2.x versions), OS/2, BeOS, Mac OS X Server
Step 2: ) Make sure your Internet connection is up and running (Online) and run the client you just downloaded to install it. If you downloaded a text client, put it in the folder you want to run it from first.

During the install, you may need to set a few parameters on the [SETI@home Preferences] window. The three parameters (Data Analyst, Network Connection, and Proxy) can be left at the default settings for most single user PCs that connect to the Internet via dial-up modem. If the PC is running on a LAN that connects to the Internet via a Proxy server, you will have to enter the proxy server?s IP address or DNS name in the HTTP Proxy box. The HTTP Proxy port number is normally port 80, but if your proxy server is using a different port number you will have to change it to the correct port number. A proxy setting is not always needed if you are behind a gateway (Sygate, Wingate, etc.) rather than a proxy server.

Step 3: ) The next step is to Log the client in, so that you can start looking for ET.

If you have a SETI@home user account, all you have to do is enter your email address and the SETI client will log into SETI@home and download a Work Unit (WU).

If you don?t have an account already set up with SETI@home, you need a VALID EMAIL address (that you have access to) to create an account. You need a VALID EMAIL address, so that SETI@home can email your PASSWORD to you. The password is needed, so that you can join Team AnandTech. On the SETI@home [Welcome] window, make sure "First time user (create new account)" is selected and the click the [OK] button. Fill in the appropriate boxes with your: nickname & email address, etc.. When you finish filling in the boxes, click the [Submit] button. After a few seconds, the SETI client will download a single WU to start analyzing.

Note: 1.) SETI@home uses your email address as your user ID. 2.) You can run SETI@home client on multiple systems using one account. If you plan to run the SETI client on multiple systems just use the same email login account on all the clients. You will get credited for all the work units that are completed on all the systems that are using your SETI@home login account.

Step 4: ) The final step is to join Team AnandTech @ SETI.

To join Team AnandTech, you?ll need to enter your email address and your password. Go here or here to join Team AnandTech.

Ok, it's all setup, now what?
Now sit back and let your computer do the work. If you chose the screensaver option, you might rarely notice that your computer is actually doing something useful when you don't need it.
