My wife is currently itching for a new fantasy series to read. I'm a scifi guy and know nothing at all about what is out there is fantasy land. She has read all of the Wheel of Time and Song of Ice and Fire books if that helps as a starting point.

I second the sword of truth series. I also would recommend the Malazan Book Of The Fallen series by Steven Erickson. It can be a little wordy, but a GREAT story and her really brings it all together.

Elizabeth Moon - the Deed of Paksenarrion trilogy

L.E. Modesitt Jr. - The Magic of Recluce (then the others, preferably in publication date order)

Steven Brust - The Book of Jhereg (first 3 Vlad Taltos books in 1 trade pb)

C. S. Friedman is a decent author, tho I haven't read anything by her since The Coldfire Trilogy.

someone already mentioned the paksenarion series by elizabeth moon. so i'll just mention it. same with the ra salvatore dark elf series.

so i'll throw out raymond feist's riftwar saga that spans something like 20 books.

the old school dragonlance chronicles by margaret weis and tracy hickman is another option

a mix between fantasy/sci fi sorta is jane yolen's the pit dragon trilogy

the whole dragons of pern by anne mccaffrey - another whole world set harpers, dragonriders, all sorts of fun

mercedes lackey had quite a few sci fi and fantasy series too. i liked the valedemar world set with the vows & honor trilogy being good as well as most of the others.

add on piers anthony's magic kingdom of landover series - kinda different from the standard fantasy. anthony's a bit quirkier is how i best describe it and not so much hardcore fantasy i guess. he's also got the xanth series which i never got into.

I started reading the Wheel of Time and Sword of Truth novels around the same time because I wanted to read some long epic novels, but the Wheel of Time series was boring to me by the 7th book. The Sword of Truth books kept me interested all the way through and if she's watched the Legend of the Seeker TV show, that's the books the show is based on. Otherwise, I would also recommend the books by Robin Hobb and for some humorous and lighthearted Fantasy, the Myth series by Robert Asprin.

The First Law series by Joe Ambercrombie
Really good dark fantasy series. Has 3 main books and 2 ad on extras.

The Farseer series by Robin Hobb
There are several series set in this world with The Farseer books being the first part. Think we are up to 10 books now.

As mentioned before, the Malazan series by Erikson is a good read. Esslemont has 3 books that tie in as well, so you are looking at 13 books total. That should take some time since all of them are long (over 3 million words by Erikson).

Sword of Truth and Dresden are both fantastic series. I would also recommend anything by Brandon Sanderson, he is the Author that is finishing the Wheel of Time and his works are fantastic. The Mistborn Trilogy, The Way of Kings, Elantris and Warbreaker are all fantastic books.

I'm still pissed I've got The Omen Machine when it came out, but haven't had any time to read it. Got to put that #1 on my New Years Resolutions.
