does anybody here play fantasy baseball with the points system? for example, where you pick the offensive/pitching categories, then assign weights to each one so that they're not each equal the same?

for example, triples (a result of luck mostly) should not be worth as much as homeruns and RBIs...

I am just curious as to a good "standard" points system, with weights distributed to approximately what they're worth in the real game...

This year is the first year that I've ever played in a points league, so I don't know what the standard system is. However, here is the scoring system used in my league:

Hitting - R (1), 1B (1), 2B (2), 3B (3), HR (4), RBI (1), SB (1), CS (-1), BB (1), IBB (1), K (-1)
Pitching - IP (1), W (5), L (-3), CG (3), SHO (3), SV (4), OUT (.5), H (-.5), ER (-1), BB (-.5), K (1), HLD (3)

The numbers in parentheses are the number of points for each of the categories.

Just look it up under Yahoo's rotisserie leagues. I'm not a fan of point systems myself, head-to-head is more fun.

One flaw that I see in the points system is that there really isn't a reason to carry a reliever. A decent starter should score more points than your average reliever, and each year there are usually a few decent or good starters that also qualify at RP. So unless you have Lidge or Rivera, why not just pick up a couple of SP and give yourself a few extra points? I picked up Aaron Heilman and Kyle Davies in my league since they've had great springs and both have just about locked up positions in their respective rotations for the beginning of the season. Barring injury, demotion to the bullpen, or a string of rough outings, they'll stay there for the whole year and my RP should outscore any other team's RP.
